To ALL WnoM IT MAY coNonnN:
Be it known that we, ABNER S. HARDING and NIGHOLASREED, of Otisville, in the county of Orange, and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Lock; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawingspforming part of thisy specication, in which- Figure l represents a side elevation ot' this invention. l
Figure 2 is a transverse section ofthe same taken in the plane indicated by the line :u x, iig. 3.
Figure 3 is a longitudinal section of the same, the line y y, fig. 2, indicating the plane of section.
Figure 4 is a detached elevation of the sliding bolt.

This invention relates to a lock of that class commonly known as commutation locks, the operation of which depends upon the position of a series of disks which are marked on" their circumference with letters or figures, and perforated with central holes and radiating slots through which the. bolt slides. The bolt is com- J posed of a bar which fits the central holes of the disks, and from which radiate arms which can be made to pass A through the radiating slots of the disks, provided said disks are turned to the proper position. 'lhc disks are enclosed in a ease, one side of which is hinged and fastened by means of a screw which is concealed under the shackle when the device is locked. ABy removing the screw and4 opening the hingo, ithc disks can be removed and the set of the lock changed. .4
A represents the case of my lock, which is made of brass or any other suitable material. The ends of this case are perforated with holes, a, iu whiehthe bolt B slides, and this boltpis provided with a series of 'radiating f arms, b, situated at equal distances apart, and extending from 'the bolt, so that they enclose an obtuse -anglgri as shown in fig. 2. On the bolt B, and between the radiating arms b, are mounted the disks C, each of which is provided with a circular cavity, so that the same Work close together, and yet leave room for the radiating arms I). Said disks are perforated with radiating slots, c, which 'correspond in position to the radiating arms, andare of such a size that, by turning `said disks to the proper position, the arms b can be made to pass through said slots. On the peripheries of the disks are marked a series of figures or letters, whereby the operation of setting the disks is facilitated, and by interchanging said disks the combination can be changed at pleasure. The case A is provided at one end with a hinged lid, e, which swings on a pivot, f, and is fastened to the body of the case by a screw, g. By removing this screw the lid can be opened, and access can be hadto the disks, so as to change the same whenever it may be desired. When the shackle E is locked the screw gis 4concealed and protected, so 'that the disks cannot bemeddlcd with by unauthorized persons. lf desired, this arrangement can also bc applied to door locks or locks et' any other construction.
What we claim as new, an'd desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The hinged lid e of thecase A, in cembinatior-.i with the scrcwg, shackle E, disks C, and bolt B, constructed and operating substantially as and for the purpose described. v
ABNER S. IIARDING,
NICHOLAS REED.
