sPEoIFioA'rIoN swa part of Letters mat No. 637,185, dated November 14, me. hpplieation filed May 19, 1899. sens No. 717,454. (No than.)
To aZZ whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I,MERvIN WILMER TOZER, of Dunton, in the county of Dolores and State of Colorado, have invented a new andImproved Tool, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to an improvement in tools having handles in which a number of tool-bits are carried by the same handle and any one of which bits may be brought into use as desired. 7
My invention comprises the novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
Figure 1 is a view of the device with one of the bits extended. Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1, but taken at right angles thereto. Fig.
3 is a longitudinal section through the clamping end of the tool-handle and the pivot ends of the bits. Fig. 4 is a section taken upon the line at 4 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the clamping-bolt employed.
My invention is herein shown as adapted for use in connection with screw-drivers but it is evident that other forms of tool-bits may be used in place of the screw-driver bits herein shown. 7
The handle A is formed of a fiat bar of steel which is bent upon itself so that the ends are alongside of and parallel with each other and is made of such size that the bits, which are pivoted between the ends of said bar, may be turned backward and lie in the loop formed by the handle when desired. The bits B are pivoted between the ends of the handle by means of an eyebolt D, which serves to clamp the bits and handle together. To insure that the bits are firmly held by the handle, the bits and handle are both provided with intermeshing ribs and grooves 19, which are herein shown as extending longitudinally of both the bits and the handle and are adapted to intermesh with each other, so that when the bolt clamps the parts together it is practically impossible to turn'the parts upon eachother.
The bolt D may be made as an ordinary bolt; but it is preferred that the eyebolt shown in Fig. 5 be used in order that an independent tool, such as a file, may be secured to the handle when desired. With this object in view an eye D is formed upon the head of the bolt, which eye is provided with a recess d, and two projections a are secured to one side of the handle, the projections being provided with small notches a in their upper ends, said notches being inline with the opening or eye in the bolt-head;
By loosening the clamping-bolt the shank of a file or any similar tool, as illustrated by the file E in Fig. 3, may be inserted in the notches a and the opening in the eye D and then secured by tightening the thumb-nut D upon the opposite end of the bolt D. The handle A, it will be seen, may be used in connection with a great number of ordinary tools and will hold all of them securely in place.
Having thus fully described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A tool comprising a handle having separated jaws and multiple bits between the jaws, said jaws and bits having holes for receiving a clamping and pivot bolt, a bolt passing through said holes in the jaws and bits and provided with an apertured head adapted normally to engage the outer surface of one jaw to clamp the jaws together, said jaw having projections on opposite sides of the bolt and in line with the hole in the head and adapted in combination with said apertured head to hold the tang of an extra tool, the bolt-head meanwhile being raised from contact with the jaw and the clamping-pressure being communicated to the jaw through said tool-tan g and projections.
2. A tool comprising a handle having two separated jaws, multiple bits between said jaws, the bits and jaws having interlocked grooves and recesses and holes for receiving a clamping-bolt, the hole in one jaw being square, said jaw also having notched projections on its outer side and on opposite sides of the hole for the clamping-bolt, a clamping-bolt passing through the handle and bits and having an eye in its head provided with a square hole having a central notch on its outer side, and a squared section beneath the head fitting the square hole in the jaw, a] may bear directly on the jaw to clamp the thumb-nut on the other end of the bolt whereparts together when the eye is not used for by the tang of a tile or similar tool may be holding an extra, tool. held Within the eye in the bolt-head and the I MERVIN WILMER TOZER.
