TOOL-HOLDER.

SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 613,952, dated November 8, 1898.

To aZZ whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, CHARLES H. YoUNos, a citizen of the United States, residing at Belmont, in the county of Allegany and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Tool-Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

This improvement relates to that style of tool-holders comprising two jaws which are set in the center of the same and which are forced together to hold atool atright angles to the holder, as in the ease of angers and similar tools.

The object of the invention is to provide a holder of this class which will be convenient in use, cheaply made, and not liable to wear out or get out of order;

To these ends the invention consists in the peculiar construction hereinafter more particularly described, and then definitely claimed at the end hereof.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan of a handle constructed according to my improvement. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same, partly in section. Fig. 3 is a side view with one of the handles removed and used as a wrench. Fig. 4 is a vertical longitudinal section of a modified form of my invention.

Referring now to the details of the drawings by numerals, 1 indicates the main part of the holder, and 2 a removable part, the latter being internally threaded to fit a screw threaded boss 3, forming one of the extremities of the main part 1, and provided with a polygonal hole 5, whose use will be hereinafter explained.

In the center or stock of the holder is a slot 5, in which are set two jaws 6, provided with pins 7 to prevent their dropping out accidentally. These jaws are each provided with V-shaped grooves, as clearly shown in Fig. 1, by which the tool is to be gripped.

The boss 3is provided with a female thread to receive a set-screw, which latter, when screwed up, will press the jaws together and thus securely clamp and hold fast any tool set between them.

When the holder is to be used, the removable handle 2 is screwed oi the boss and the hole in the handle 2 slipped over the poly onal head of the screw 9, and the latter is then screwed in against the jaws 6 by using said handle 2 as a wrench, as shown in Fig. 3, until the tool is firmly held in the jaws.

If it is desired to remove the tool, the handle 2 is unscrewed and used as a wrench to unscrew the set-screw 9, when the tool may be removed and another one inserted by pro= ceeding as before described.

The holders should be made of malleable cast iron or drop-forgings; but in some cases I may make them partly of wood,as indicated in Fig. 4, in which the handle proper is made of wood and the stock part of meta1,with shanks running into the wood part.

In some forms of my invention I may make one of the j aws,as shown in Fig. 4, integral with the stock, or, in other words, make a groove like that in the jaws in one end of the slot, in which case one movable jaw would be sufficient, as the end of the slot would become a jaw; but I prefer two movable jaws. These or other changes may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.

What I claim as new is- 1. The combination in a tool-holder, of a slotted stock, jaws therein, a set-screw bearing against one of the jaws and a removable handle provided with a recess to receive the set-screw when said handle is in its normal position, and having a hole in one side adaptted to fit the head of said set-screw, substantially as described.

2. The combination in a tool-holder, of a handle having a slotted stock and a threaded boss, of jaws set in the slot in the stock, a set-screw acting on said jaws, and a removable handle internally threaded to screw on the boss and provided with a polygonal hole to fit the head of the set-screw, substantially as described.
