WGON-STNDARDL PECIIICATION fo rr ning palt 0f Lttef Patint N0. 636,814, dnbd. Novefia.hef 14, 1899.
Apulication filed Inne 12,1899.
T0 v'oZl zbhom it may concern:
Be in known that I, CHARLES KRETSCHMER, a citizen of the United States, residing als Pueblo, in the county 0f Pueblo and State of C010- rado, have invented a newand useful Wagon Standard, 0f Which the following is a specification.
My invention relates 130 certain improvements in wagon-standards and aims 120 pro Vide a standard which Will permit adj ustment of a sbake 130 the requirements of the load on the wagen and which may be firmly secured 110 the bolster withou1; splitting 0f the same. These objects I att-ain by the use 0f the coustruction illusbrated in the ant1exed drawings; and ehe invention cousists in eertain novel features 0f 1:he same, as will be hereinafter first fully described and then particularly poin ted 0111; in the claims.
In the drawings referred 110 and forming a part hereof Figure 1 is a perspeetive view 0f a standard constructed in accordance With my invention'. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the sarne, taken longitudinally through 1;he bolster. Fig. 3 is a d'etail perspective view looking a1; the nnde-r side 0f ohe lower and of the standard.
The bolster A is 0f 1zhe usual form and size. In carr.ying out my invention I seeure upon the upper side of the bolster a metal plate B, the edges of which follow the edge of the bolster, and within a narrow gro0ve O in the bottom of 1:he bolster I secure a strip 0f metal D. Near its -end the upper plate B is provi-ded With a perforation E, whieh registers with a socket F in the upper side 0f the bol- =s1ser, as shown more elearly in Fig. 2. The standard consists of a base-plate G and plates 01 Walls H, rising therefrom. The base-plate is provided with the depending rib or flahge I, which follows 1ahe c0ntour of 1Jhe bolster and fits agains1; and around the end of the same. An opening J is formed in the plate near its outer end, through which a holt K may be passed downward through the bolster and secured by a nut L1urned h0me agaihsb the strip D. A13 the inner e0rners of 11h0 baseplate are provided lateral enlargernents M, which serve as bearings for the bolts N, whieh ate inserted downward throngh the same and extend below the bolster on opposite sides of 1he Same Upon the lower ende of these bol'os I mount a elipplate O, which is ada)pted 130 bear against the bottzom 0f the bolster, and be low the said plate the seeuring-nts P afe mounted on the bolts. When the nu1ss ar' turned home, the clip-plate is forc'ed against 1she bolster and the several parts secured; as Will be readily understood. cilitate the plaeing of the standard in 1;he proper pos-iion 0n the bolster, I provide at the eenter of the inner edge 0f 1;he base-plate a teat Q, which is adapted 1:0 enter the opening E and engage the socket F. The vertical plates 01 walls 0f 11110 standard constai1aute an open box adapted to receive a stake R. Across he open outer side 0f the box and connecting 1ahe side walls are a plurality 01: braces S, Which serve as bearings for se tscrews T, adapted 110 be turned h0me against 1she stake o0 hold the saxne within the box, and in order to provide a firm hold for the set-Screws and prevent wear 0n the stake I face the stake with a me1sal reinforcing-strip U, as shown.
IL Will be seen ab once that I have provide'd a standard whieh is ligh1: and ab the same time very strong. The teat and depending flange.
01 rib on -1ahe base-plate enable the user to instantlyset 111 in pr0per position on1ahe bolster and also aid in maintaining it in tha position. The device is firmly secured in pla-ce by simply turning home three nuts. The vertical Walls of the standard are 0f the proper height t0 hold an ordi nary load. Should uhe load 0n the Wagon, however, rise 130 a height greater than 1she said walls,1he sbake R is raised t0 1she heigh1: necessary 10 hold ohe load and is lield at tha1; height by turning the set-screws home. 111 will thus be seen that the standards and stakes togetsher form an extensible 01 adjustable standard whieh can be instantly adjusted 110 the requirernents 01: any parbicular load.
From 11he foregoing 112 is thought that the cons1sruetion, operation, and the manyadvantages 0f the herein-described wagon-staandard will be apparent o0 those skilled in the art without; further deseriptaion, and 111 will be understood 11ha11 ehanges in the size, shape, proportion, and minor details of cons1zruction may be resorted 110 without departing from the spiri1: or sacrificing any of 1;he advantages of the invention.
In order 1:0 fa-- Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The combination with a standard in the form of an open box, of a sbake sli'dingly mounted berein, a, 1netal strip extending lengbhwise of opposite sides of said stake and bent; around one end thereof, and a set-screw mounoed in the box and bearing against; ehe metal strip 011 bhe stake, substantially as set forth.
2. The combinaoion of the bolster having a soeket in its npper side, a standard having its base-plate provided with a teat adapted t engage said socket, and with a depending fiange 01 rib to fit around the end 0f uhe bolster, said flange 01 1ib having thickened and verticallyapertaured endsand fasteners passing through said apertured ends ab opposite sides of the bolscer, substannially as set forth.
3. The combination of the bolster having a socket in its upper side and longitudinal groove in its under side, of a meoa1 plate secured on the npper side of the bolster and provided wibh an opening registering with 'he socket in ohe bolster, a metal strip secured in Lhe groove in the under side of the bolster, a standard having its base-plate provided wioh a depending flange 0x rib fitting around. the end of the bolster, and with a ueao engaging Ehe socket and Ehe opening registering therewith, a holt inserted through the baseplate of the standard and the metal plate and strip 011 the bolster, a 111113 on lahe lower end of said holt tnrning home against the mebal strip, bolts inserted through the 1ib of Ehe base-plate and passing below the bolster 011 opposite sides of the same, a clip-plate monnted on the lower ends of the said bolts, and fastening-nuts adapted 110 be turned home against he said clip-plate, substantially as set; fortzh.
In testimony that I clairn the foregoing as myown I have hereto afiixed my signauure in the presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES KRETSCIIMER. \Vitnessesz T. G. MCCARTHY, W. H. THOMPSON.
