UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HERBERT C. EVERED, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
CLOTHES-DRIER.
$PEGIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 636,510, dated November 7, 1899. Application filed June 15,1399. Serial No. 720,661. (NomodelJ To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERBERT O. EVERED, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Clothes Drier, of whichthe following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in clothes-driers.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of clothes-driers and to provide a simple, inexpensive, and efficient one which will be strong and durable and adapted to be suspended from a wall adjacent to a window and capable of enabling clothes to be readily arranged on it and removed from it without necessitating a person leaning any great distance out of a window.
A further object of the invention is to provide a clothes-drier of this character which will accommodate a large quantity of clothes and which may have its size increased, if desired.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of a clothes-drier constructed in accordance with this invention. the same.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in both figures of the drawings.
1 designates a horizontal supporting-frame comprising a substantially angular inner portion 2 and parallel guide-rods 3, extending outward from the inner portion, as clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings. The horizontal supporting-frame, which is shown in the drawings as constructed of tubular metal and couplings, maybe constructed of any other suitable material, and it is designed to be arranged adjacent to a window,a s shown; but it may be supported at any other desired point on a wall or the like. Its inner angular portion consists of a transverse rod 4, and side rods 5, which are provided at their inner ends with depending arms or tongues 6, engaging eyes 7, located at opposite sides of a window 8, and the said frame may be readily removed from the eyes. The outer guide-rods 3 are con- Fig. 2 is a side elevation of nected at their inner ends with the transverse rod 4 by T-shaped couplings, and their outer ends are connected by a U-shaped coupling 9, which is provided with an eye 10, receiving one end of an inclined brace 11, and the lat ter, which is disposed centrally over-the supporting-frame, is provided at its upper end with a hook 12, which engages an eye 13, arranged at the top of the window. The outer portion of the frame 1 supports a reel 14, which is adapted to slideinward and outward to permit clothes to be readily hung on it and removed from it. The reel 14 is provided with a central hub 16, and it has radial arms 17, connected by parallel lines 18, which support the clothes. The hub, which is provided with parallel ears or flanges to receive the inner ends of the arms 17, is mounted on a central pivot of a hanger 19, which is provided atits top with a pair of sleeves 20, arranged to slide on the guide-rods 3 of the outer portion of the frame.
Any number of lines may be stretched around the arms, and the latter are provided with loops 21, forming sockets for detachable sections 22, and the latter, which are secured at any desired adjustment by fastening devices, such as screws 23, are adapted to support extra 'lines. Only one extra line 24 is shown in the accompanying drawings; but it will be readily apparent that any number may be provided and arms of any length may be employed. The reel is adapted to be rotated to bring the Various sections of the lines opposite the window, and it may be moved inward and outward on the parallel guides, which prevent'the reel from swaying or tilting vertically. The sections which form extensions of the. radial arms need not be employed and may be removed when not required, and any suitable means may be employed for securing them at the desired adj ustrnent.
The clothes-drier, which is exceedingly simple and inexpensive in construction and which may be mounted on any suitable support, is adapted especially for use adjacent to awindow, and it will enable a large quantity of clothes to be hung therefrom. The reel is adapted to slide inward and outward on the parallel guide-rods of the supporting-frame,
and it is also capable of rotation, so that any portion of it may be brought close to the window, and its capacity may be readily increased when necessary. The double guiderods and the pair of sleeves which slide on them hold the reel in a horizontal position and prevent it from tilting or swaying.
Changes in the form, proportion, size, and the minor details of construction within the scope of the appended claims may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
What is claimed is 1. A clothes-drier comprising the supporting-frame provided with parallel guide-rods and having a substantially angular inner portion adapted to extend to the opposite sides of a window, a hanger provided with a depending pivot and having a pair of sleeves slidingly mounted on the guide-rods, and a reel mounted on the said pivot and arranged below the supporting-frame and adapted to be moved inward and outward on the same, substantially as described.
2. A clothes-drier comprising a horizontal supporting-frame having parallel guide-rods, and provided with an inner portion adapted to extend to the opposite sides of a window and provided with depending arms for engaging eyes of a support, a hanger provided with a pair of sleeves slidingly mounted on the guide-rods, a pivot carried by the hanger, and a reel mounted on the pivot and arranged below the supporting-frame and adapted to be moved inward and outward on the same, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto afiixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
HERBERT C. EVERED.
