CHARLES D'WIGIIT FULLER, OF IWIINNEAPGLIS, MINNESOTA.
CLOTH ES-DRIER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of L'etters Patent No. 401,264, dated April 9, 1889.
Application nea January 4,1888. serai No. 259,776. (No modem pending frame is provided with the horizontal 5o To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES DWIGHT FULLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Clothes- Driers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in clothes-driers; and it has for its object to provide a simple, light, and strong rack which may be readily and quickly adjusted in either the open or folded position, and which will have a great length of drying-rod.
I accomplish the above objects in the device comprising two side frames hinged together at their upper ends and a depending central frame which is attached at its upper end between the upper ends of the side frames.
My invention consists in the above arrangement of the drying-frames, and also in the peculiar form of coupling or hinge which is used to connect the frames. 1
The invention is more fully described hereinafter in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure l is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a detail plan view showing the Amanner of attaching the coupling or hinge to the frames. Fig. 3 is a det-ached perspective view of one of the couplings or hinges, showing the proximate parts of the drier-frame in dotted lines.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A A represent the side or supporting frames of the drier, which are of any preferred form, (preferably rectangular, as shown in the drawings and are provided with horizontal dryingrods B B. These side frames are adapted to rest at theirlower ends on the floor, and they are hinged together at their upper ends, as hereinafter described.
C represents a depending central frame, which is arranged between the side frames, and is attached at its upper end to the upper ends of the same, in a manner .to be explained. The depending frame hangs in a vertical position between the frames A, but it is not intended to reach the floor. The dedrying-rods D.
E E represent the couplings or hinges at the upper ends of the frames, and they consist of wire, which is bent to form the vertical rings F F` at the ends of the coupling, adapted to embrace the top drying-rods of the side frames, and a central horizontal ring, G, which embraces the side bar, H, of the central depending frame.
I I represent small keepers, which are driven into the side bars H, over the side of the ring G, to prevent the depending frame from dropping to the floor, and similar keepers, K K, are driven into the rods B B over vthe sides of the rings F F, to prevent the coupling or hinge from sliding on the rods B.
It will be readily seen that the side frames are capable of lateral swing, thereby allowing their lower ends to be drawn apart at will to any desired extent, limited only by the upper ends of the side bars L of the said frames coming in contact with each other. The central depending frame, however, will always maintain its vertical position. The upper ends of the side bars Il of the latter are tapered, as seen in the drawings, Fig. 3, to enable the upper ends of the side bars L to fold over them.
This drier, as will be seen from the foregoing, is simple and light, and when folded it occupies very little space. It may, further, be cheaply manufactured.
The hinge or coupling herein described is simple, easily manufactured, and cheap, and it is admirably adapted to allow the required movements of the various parts of the drier. While the central depending frame, C, is intended to be maintained in a vertical position intermediate between the side frames by its own weight, still said central frame is designed to have a limited lateral swing in the space between the two side frames, the coupling or hinges E allowing such movement. Special stress is laid on this feature.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- In a clothes-drier, the two side frames, A, resting at their lower ends on the floor, combined with the central frame, C, said central frame being shorter than the side frames, S0 as not to reach to the Hoor, and the hinge or coupling connecting the side and .central frames together at their upper ends, said hinge comprising the end rngs,I1`,to embrace the bars of the side frames, and the central ring, G, to embrace one of the bars of the Cen- 'oral frame, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as Io my own I have hereto affixed my signature 1n presence of two Witnesses.
CHARLES DWIGHT FULLER.
