CLEVlS FOR WHIFFLETREES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Fatent No. 634,926, dated October 17, 1899.
Application filed March 23,1898.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. WELLS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Seville, in the county of Gratiot and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Center Olevises for Whiffletrees, of which the following is a specification.
Figure l is a perspective view showing the application of the invention and attachments e and f. Fig. 2 is a cross-section showing swivel in the socket of the socket-plate aand attachments e and g; Fig. 3, an elevation of the swivel.
The object of this invention is to' provide a center clevis for whiffletrees, either single or double, which will at all times give free'play thereto, thus preventing the twisting of clevises and splitting and breaking of the wood, and, further, to provide a cheap and practical attachment to a doubletree or singletree adapted for connection to removable hooks and clevises by means of the removable pin or bolt d, and is specially useful for hauling or dragging by means of a chain and is for the purpose of preventing the twisting or kinking thereof; yet the practical utility of this invention in manifold ways will be at once obvious to any teamster, for the grab-hook and clevis can remain attached to the evener when the team is hitched to a wagon, sleigh, or other vehicle, and thereby the team can be quickly transferred to a plow, road-scraper, or a chain for hauling logs, stone, or stumps.
In plowing and scraping the attachments e and plow-clevis fare used, thus permitting the change from plow to road-scraper, or vice versa, in the quickest possible time.
By means of the movable pin 01 hooks or clevises may be attached as becomes necessary.
The socket-plate a is made in one piece of cast malleable iron, the center larger and heavier and curving outwardly in a semicircular shape, with a concave recess in the side next .to the whiffletree large enough to receive the ball-shaped bur c, and has a longitudinal slot m through the semicircular center on theopposite side, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2,
Serial No. 674,890. (No model.)
m and receive the bur c'screwed or riveted to it, as shown in drawings.
The bur c is made with a convex surface to fit the concave recess in the socket-plate a, having a hole through the center to receive the shank of the swivel-bolt I) through the longitudinal slot 011.
The.plow-clevis fand hook g are so constructed as to fit and fill the inside of the clevis part of bolt 1?, either of which may be combined with attachments b and e by means of the removable pin d.
Olevis c is so constructed as to fit and clasp the outside of the clevis-head of bolt 6.
The special combination of the socket-plate a and swivel-bolt b with any twoof these attachments by the movable pin cl, as represented in the drawings, provides a tool that is new, useful, cheap, practicable, and. durable. 1
I am aware that hooks with heads working in a socket, and thus made to swivel, have been invented to meet the demand of a coupling to change a team from wagon to plow,
or vice versa; but none of them are practical, for the hooks of that kind,-so faras patented, are of such shape as to become unhooked so easily that they are of no utility whatever.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the whiffletree 7c, the socket-plate a having the slot m with the clevis-shaped swivel-bolt I) having the removable pin d adapted to removable hooks and chains, and the ball-shaped head 0, being riveted or screwed to the shank of said bolt 1) after it is entered into the slot m substantially as described. 4
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
