IMPROVEMENT IN PIGKETS FOR'FENGES AND WALLS.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, AiLPHONSO DABB, of Elizabethport, in the county of Union, and State of New Jersey,
have invented a new and useful Pie'keted Strip for Walls or Fences, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, and
which represents a side elevation of a picketed strip, eonstru'cted aceording to my improvement, as applied to a board fence.
To elucidate the novelty and merit of my invention, it is only necessary here-briefly to refer to'the disadvantages which attach to the common picket and other fence so far as any security is afforded against scaling or being climbed over. In a picket fence the tops of the pickets offer but little protection, as they may readily be broken ofE, \VllilGlbOitId or other fences which have an uppenlongitudinal' strip v0E wood secured to them, with nails or spikes arranged so that their sharp ends protrude above the strip, are but little if any more secure, as said nails or spikes are easily bent over or down, and, when so turned over or flattened, present no sharp obstacle or projection to stop juveniles or others climbing over.
My invention, which is alike applicable to walls and picket or other fences, consists of a picketed strip, forming a new article of manufacture, and that maybe sold by the yard, n'hichhas for its elements a combination of a wrought-iron strip, A, secured to the wall or fence in any suitable manner, and malleable cast-iron pickets, B, rivetcdor otherwise made fast to the-strip A, and, though they may. he made'of any desired plain or ornamental pattern, formed with pointed projections to give the necessary security againstclimbing; For attachment to a picket fence, the strip A may be secured tothe sides of the picket-s by a strap, a, arranged to clasp or saddle the strip as it were, and nailed or bolted to the fence.
A picketed strip constructed of a wrought-iron bar or strip, A, and malleable cast-iron pickets, B, not only possesses the advantage of great strength,'and, for the security afforded, and ornamental appearance that may be given it by casting the pickets of any desired shape, comparative cheapness, but, as issuing from the manufacturer, constitutes an entirety ready for use and easy'of attachment, that, by simply clipping or cutting the bar or strip A, may be supplied of any desired length to 'suit local or other demands. But, apart from these considerations, or in advance of them, there is a particular gain in such a construction, from the fact that while the malleable cast-iron pickets B are free from brittleness as compared with ordinary cast iron, and therefore not easily broken, they, at the same time, cannot be so bent or flattened down as may wrought iron, but that the same will present points or projections which will effectually interfere with scaling or climbing over the wall or fence. A picketed strip thus constructed combines in fact the necessary rigidity with the requisite flexibility to establish every security.
Having described my invention, I claim, as a new article of manufacture, a picketcd strip made up of a. wrought-iron bar or strip A, and malleable cast-iron pickets B, for use on walls or fences, substantially as specified.
