TO ALL WHOM IT MAY 4CONCERN:

Be it known thatlI, THOMAS MORRIS, of McGregor, Clayton county, Iowa, have invented a new and usetul improvement in Fence; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being 'had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of a portion of my improved fence.

Figure 2 isa vertical cross-section of the same taken through the line x fr, fig. I.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

My invention has for its object to furnish an improved fence, simple in construction, and easily put up and taken down; and it consists in the combination of the panels and braces with each other when said panels and braces are constructed and arranged as hereinafter more fully described.

A are the panels, the horizontal boards al a2 a a* of which arc secured in their proper relative positions by cross-hars a5 secured to them upon both sides of their centres, and by the` cross-bars a5 secured to them upon both sides at one end, the side edges of said end cross-bars extending out beyond the ends of the horizontal boards, as shown in fig. 1. The ends et' the horizontal boards between the end cross-bars a6 have shoulders formed upon them, .the shoulders of the boards a1 and a3 being dove-tailed, and the shoulders of the boards a2 and a* being square. The other or free ends of the horizontal boards have shoulders formed upon them corresponding with and 'fitting into the shoulders upon the ends between th-e cross-bars a, where they are secured in plaeedyone or niore stay-blocks, B, inserted between the cross-bars a and between the edges of the horizontal boards, where they are secured in place by stay-pins passing through the said cross-bars and the said blocks. The fence is held in a vertical position by the braces C, which should be placed at or near the points at which the panels are connected to each other. A The braces O are let into each other half their thickness, and have notches in the upper and lower angles formed by their intersection to receive the edges of' the horizontal beards a* and a2, so that ithe braces hold the panels in a vertical position, and at the same time the panels hold the braces locked. The panels A have been represented and described as having four horizontal boards, but 'this number may be increased or diminished without departing from my invention. In turning acorner notches and slots are formed inthe cross-bars a, and ends ofthe horizontal boards, which are secured in place by one or more stay-pins.-

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The panels A and braces C, constructed and combined with each other substantially in the manner hereiri shown and described and for the purpose set forth.
