EDVARD T. CLOWE, OF WOODLAND, CALIFORNIA.
BOLT HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 634,392, dated October 3, 1899.
Application filed January 25,1897. Serial No. 620,506. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD T. CLowE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Woodland, in the county of Yolo and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bolt-Holders and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in tire-bolt holders, the same being especially designed for the purpose of assisting blacksmiths and others in removing nuts from the inner ends of tire-bolts when the heads thereof slip loosely in their sockets and there is a tendency on the part of said bolt to slip when the nut is unscrewed.
The invention consists of a lever or bar havinga clip pivotally connected to one end thereof adapted to surround the folly of a wheel to form a fulcrum and a thumb-screw having left-hand threads thereon, whose inner end projects through the rod or lever and is provided with teeth or projections thereon, which are adapted to engage the outer surface of the head of the tire-bolt. The clip referred to may be made in two parts, so that the size thereof may be adjusted to accommodate it to any-sized wheel or any thickness of felly. The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my device shown applied to use. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same detached. Fig. 3 is a section through the two parts of the clip; and Fig. 4 is an edge view of said clip, showin g the two parts in clamped position.
Like reference-numerals indicate like parts in the different views.
In Fig. l I have represented a wheel 1 upon an anvil with my improved tire-bolt holder shown in operative position with said wheel. The said wheel has the usual tire 2, tire-bolt 3, and securing-nut 4 upon 'the.inner end of said bolt.
My holder is made up of an operating rod or lever 5, with an extensible clip 6 pivoted in the bifurcated outer end of said lever, the said clip being adapted to embrace the folly of the wheel to provide a fulcrum for said lever. The clip is made in two parts, as shown in the drawings, to accommodate it to wheels of different sizes or with different thicknesses of fellies. In such case the part 7 is pivoted directly to the lever 5 and has a roughened 0r toothed'outer face, against which rests the inner roughened or toothed face of the part 8. The said part 8 itself is provided with an elongated slot 9, through-which projects a threaded bolt 10, secured to the part 7 and having a thumb-screw 11 upon its outer end. The part 8 also terminates in a hook adapted to fit over and embrace the folly. By this means the size of the clip may be adjusted as circumstances or occasions maydictate. Projecting through the rod or lever 5, at a point a short distance below the end thereof in which the clip 6 is pivoted, is a thumb-screw 12, having left-hand screw-threads thereon and having teeth or projections 13 upon its inner end.
In using my device the clip 6 is placed around the inside of the felly of the wheel and the lever 5 forced inwardly, bringing the teeth or projections 13 upon the inner end of thethumb-screw 12 into'close contact with the head of the tire-bolt 3. A bite is obtained thereby upon said bolt 3, and the nut 4: upon the inner end thereof may then be turned in the usual manner.
The device is extremely simple in construction, cheaply made, and by its use tires may be removed or inserted in place much more rapidly than by the usual method.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The herein-described tire-bolt holder, made up of a rod or lever having an extensible clip for embracing the folly of the wheel pivoted to the outer end thereof, and consisting of overlapping and relatively adjustable parts, one of which terminates in a hook, and a projection on said rod or lever at an intermediate point having teeth or prongs upon its outer end adapted to be forced into engagement with the head of the tire-bolt, sub-- stantially as described.
I 2. The herein-described tire-bolt. holder, made up of a rod or lever, having a clip for embracing the folly of the wheel attached to the outer end thereof, thev jaws of said clip being adjustable in the direction of the length of said clip and a bolt or projection at an intermediate point having teeth or prongs upon its inner end which are adapted to be forced into engagement with the head of the tirebolt, as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The herein-described tire-bolt holder, made up of a rod or lever having bifurcated outer ends, a thumb-screw having left-hand threads thereon projecting through said rod or lever and having teeth or prongs upon its end, and a clip for embracing the felly of the wheel pivoted in the bifurcated ends of said rod or lever, the said clip belng made in two parts,
the adjacent faces of which are roughened or notched, an elongated slot in one of said parts, a threaded bolt attached to the other of said parts and projecting through said slot, and a 1 thumb-nut upon the outer end of said bolt,
as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this 20 specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
E. T. ULOWE. Witnesses:
