TIRE-BOLT HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 365,142, dated June 21, 1887.

Be it known that I, Jenn ConNnLoUs BIARKAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Atlantic, in the county of Crawford and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tire-B0lt Holders, of which the following is a specification. 7
My invention relates to tire-bolt holders; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of anovel form of hand-lever,which will be more fully hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
The object of my invention is to provide a tire-bolt holder which is simple and effective in its construction and operation, adapted for use in connection with any form of tire, easily handled, and readily understood, cheaply manufactured, and which is adapted for use in removing rusted or other bolts from the felly and tire of a wheel without necessitating a cutting of the same. I attain this object by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings,wherein like letters of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a wheel with my improved tire-bolt holder shown in operative position therewith. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of my improved the bolt holder removed from engagement with the wheel. Fig. 3 is aplan view of the same.
A indicates the holder entire, which is constructed with a long arm, a, terminating in a handle, a. The forward part of the arm, as at a curves outward from the main arm a, and thence downward,and is formed into afiat hook extension, a, which is adapted to engage with the under side of the felly B, as shown in Fig. 1, while the curved portion a of said arm passes around the felly B, and thereby per mits of a more positive and firm engagement of the hooked end (1. with the under side of said felly. In the rear of the curved portion a a spur, A, is formed with the arm a, which projects downwardly from the lower side of the said arm a, and is provided with a chiseledge formed in a transverse line to the longitudinal line of the arm a, and which is so eonstructed and arranged as to adapt it to engage with the bolt-head and hold the same while the nut is being unscrewed therefrom.
The operation and manner of using my improved device is as follows: \Vhen it is desired to remove a bolt, 1 from engagement with the folly B and the tire B, or to tighten the nut of said bolt, the hooked extension a" is passed under the folly B and the spur A adjusted to bear on the head of the bolt B, which position is fully illustrated in Fig. 1. Ahand-pressure is then brought to bear upon the handle a and the spur A held in forced contact with the head of the bolt B and pro vents the same from turning, when the nut can be removed or tightened, as may be desired, without cutting or destroying the bolt. It will be seen that when the pressure is brought to bear upon the handle a of the arm a an increased pressure will be exerted on the spur A against the head of the bolt B. Through the medium of the chisel-edge of the said spur A a biting-edge is formed, which holds the head of the boltfirmly and prevents the same from turning when the nut is being removed or tightened.
The holder is constructed of any suitable metal, preferably steel, and in any manner desirable and found most convenient.
The device needs no adjustment whatever, being applicable for use in connection with any form oftire and folly, and it will be readily seen that the dimensions and proportions thereof may be varied to suit the dimensions of the tire and felly with which it is to be used.
The novelty, utility, and adaptability of my improved holder is evident, and need not be further enlarged upon herein.
Having thus described my invention, I claim-- v 1. As an improved article of manufacture, a tire-bolt holder consisting of an arm or lever provided-with a hook at its one end, a spur on its under side, and an operating-handle, substantially as described.
2. In a tire-bolt holder, a lever, A, having a straight arm, a, provided with a handle, a, a curved portion, a", a hooked extension, 0., and a spur, A, all arranged and constructed to operate as herein described.
