- This invention relates to bolt-holders; and it has for its object to provide a tool or implement by means of which thebolts used in' 5 holding the tires of wheels to the fellies and for holding the metal shoes to sleigh-runners may be held securely against rotation while the nuts are being screwed thereonto, it being understood that this class of bolts, commonly known as tire-bolts, lie with their heads flush with the metal and are without slots such as would receive a screw-driver to hold the bolt from rotating. For this reason it is necessary that a blade be forced against the head of the bolt with great pressure to prevent the bolt from turning.

BOLT-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 729,508, dated May 26, 1903.

to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to bolt-holders; and it has for its object to provide a tool or implement by means of which thebolts used in' 5 holding the tires of wheels to the fellies and for holding the metal shoes to sleigh-runners may be held securely against rotation while the nuts are being screwed thereonto, it being understood that this class of bolts, commonly known as tire-bolts, lie with their heads flush with the metal and are without slots such as would receive a screw-driver to hold the bolt from rotating. For this reason it is necessary that a blade be forced against the head of the bolt with great pressure to prevent the bolt from turning.
A further object of the invention is to provide a tool of this nature which may be easily and quickly adjusted to different sizes of wheels and may be readily attached and detached, while being cheap of manufacture and efficient in its operation.
In the drawings forming a portion of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a vehicle-wheel and showing the present bolt holder in operative position thereon. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the bolt-holder, the loop at the end of the stem of oneof the clamping-hooks being partly broken away and that'portion of the rodthrough which the screw'is engaged being in section to show the threads thereof.

Referring now to the drawings, the present I having its lower end tapered, as shown at 8,
.below the bar 5, while the upper end thereof "above the bar is provided with a hand-wheel ,9, through the medium of which the screw may be rotated to feed it forwardly and backwardly through the bar 5.
In connection with the bar 5 are employed two hooks, including stems l0 and 11 and bills 12 and l3,respectively, and at the opposite ends of the stems from the bills are rectangular loops 1.4 and 15, which are fitted slidably upon the rod 5, so that they may be moved toward and away from the screw 7, while the rectangular forms of the loops andthe bar prevent rotation of the loops, so that the stems of the hooks depend at all times in the sameplane with the screw 7.
In the use of this bolt-holder the hooks are engaged around the inner face of the folly 16 of a wheel, so that thebar 5 lies exterior to 'the'wheel in the same plane-therewith and spaced from the felly, the hooks being engage'd at such points that the screw will aline with the tire-bolt 17. The screw is then adjust-ed through the bar 5 to engage its point with the head of the bolt,.when further adjustment of the screw will force the tapered head of the bolt tightlyinto the tapered perforations in the tire with'sufficient friction to .hold the bolt against rotation while the nut is being applied thereto.
By mounting the hooks slidably upon the rod 5 they may be adjusted readily toward and away from each other to correspond to different wheels, and this adjustment may be effected either before or after the hooks are engaged with the wheels.
In practice modifications of the specific construction shown may be made and any suitable materials and proportions may be used for the various parts without departing from the spirit of the invention.
