F. S. DIMON. WAGON IMPLEMBNT.
, No.. 243,865.v Patented July 5, A1881.
N. PETERS. mmuamgnpmr. walhingmn. u4 c UNITE. STATES FRANK S. DIMON, OF BOURBON COUNTY, KANSAS.
WAGON-IIVIPLEM ENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 243,865, dated July 5, 1881.
' Application filed January 4, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK S.D1MoN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the county of Bourbon and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tire-Tightener, 'Vrench, and Wagon-Pin; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it' appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The objectof the present invention is to provide a device which can be used for connecting the double-tree to the tongue or shafts of a wagon, for expanding the fellies of a wheel so as to enable washers to be tted on the spoketenons for the purpose of tightening the tire, andas a nutwrench for general use on the nuts about a wagon.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of the parts, which will be hereinafter more fully described, and then set forth in the claim.
In the drawings, Figure l exhibits my device when used as a wagonliammer for connecting the double-tree to the tongue. Fig. 2 shows the device in position for expanding the fellies of a wheel. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the device.
The letter A designates a head or block, which is constructed or provided with two vertical plates or flanges, B, that project beyond one of the faces of said head, so as to form rigid wrench-jaws and spoke-clamps. A small plate, C, projecting horizontally from the up per end of the head A, serves, in connection with a movable plate, D, sliding on the front face of said head, as a wrench for turning the nuts of the felly-clips, or other small nuts on a wagon. The upper end of the plate D is bent at right angles to the main portion of said plate to form the movable jaw proper, and the lower end of said plate is turned in an inward direction, and is made forked or provided with a slot for receiving the pin or bolt E. The main portion of said bolt is made cylindrical, and serves to connect the double-tree to the tongue, as is shown in Fig. 1. The bolt, above the point of connection with the sliding plate or jaw, is formed into a screw-threaded shank, F, which iits into an internally-threaded bore or socket, G, made in the head A. A collar, H, and a circumferential groove made in the bolt, below the same, retain the forked or slotted end of the plate D. A vertical slot, I, in said plate, and a screw or pin, J, projecting from the block A, serve to guide and steady the movement of said plate.
When the device is used as va tire-tightener, or more properly for expanding the fellies of a wheel, to enable washers to be fitted on the spoke-tenons, the lower end of the bolt E is rested upon a block placed upon the hub of the wheel, while the plates or flanges B receive between them one of the spokes of the wheel.
The device having been applied in the manner described, the bolt or pin E is turned so that its screw-threaded stem will work in the threaded bore of the head. This will cause the latter to press against the i'elly and expand or raise the same so as to expose the tenons ot' the spokes. Suitable split washers can now be applied to said tenons in the manner and for the purpose already stated.
The bolt or pin E can be turned by means of a small pin inserted in the hole e made therein, or by other suitable means.
The plates or ianges B, which receive a spoke and prevent the lateral displacement of the device when in use as a tire-tightener, are sufficiently far apart to receive spokes of any ordinary size. rlhese plates or tlanges B are preferably made slanting or inclined, so as to adapt the same to receive large and small axlenuts, when the device is used asa wrench for turning the same.
I am awarethat it is not broadly new to construct a wagon-hammer with wrench-jaws; but I am not aware that the bolt or pin portion of such a device has been made to answer the purpose of a handle for moving the jaws of the wrench.
It has also been proposed to expand t-he fellies of a wagon-wheel by devices actin g on the principle ot' the jack-screw, and many expedients have been resorted to for retaining such Having thus described myinvention,what1 sliding on the heed and connected with the claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters bolt or pin, as and for the purpose set forth. 1o
Patent, is- In testimony whereof I affix my signature The wagon-implement herein described, conin presence of two witnesses. 5 sisting of an internally screw-threaded head FRANK S. DIMON.
having parallel side jaws and rigid top jaw, Witnesses: the Vertice-l pin or bolt, provided With an upper W. C. PERRY. screw-threaded shank, and the plate or jew J. C. GUTHBERTSON.
