SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 699,675, dated May 13, 1902. Application filed September 21, 1901. Serial No. 76,377- (No model.)

To all whont it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALBERT F. GIwITs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Redcloud, in the county of Webster and State of Nebraska, (whose post-office address is Box 364, Redcloud, Nebraska,) have invented new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to wrenches, and has for its object the production of a wrench adapted to be attached to the spokes of a wheel, whereby the nut or bur may be removed orreplaced by the turning of the wheel and which will hold the nut or bur and washers against the outer end of the hub during the operation of removing or replacing the wheel and while the axle is being lubricated, thereby obviating the necessity of handling the nut or bur and preventing the same from dropping onto the ground.

The invention consists in a spoke-clasp of improved construction comprising but one part, and means for adjusting the same and holding it in its adjusted position.

The invention further consists in the arrangement and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed,

Referring now more particularly to the drawings by reference-numerals, 1 designates the shank of the wrench,- preferably formed rigid and downwardly and outwardly, as at2 and 3, respectively. The outwardly-curved portion 3 is provided at a point near the end thereof with a rectangular opening 4 and an open head or socket 5. The inner walls of the head or socket 5 taper gradually from the upper end thereof to adapt the head or socket to fit different-size nuts, and obviating the necessity of having more than one wrench for nuts of varying size. Thedownwardly and outwardly curved portion of the shank adapts it to extend over the outer end of the hub, permitting the head or socket to engage the nut or bur.

The rectangular opening 4 is utilized when using the wrench where the head or socket could not be used on account of the projecting portion 2-as, for instance, in removing a nut from a beam or other fiat surface.

The outer end of the shank is provided with a concave bearing-plate 6, adapted to rest against the spoke of the wheel, and in order to avoid scratching the same I provide the plate 6 with a lining 7, of any suitable yielding material.

8 designates the movable jaw or spoke-grip of the wrench, having an elongated slot 9, whereby the same is slidably secured to the shank 1 through the medium of the bolt 10. The inner end of said jaw or grip is curved, as at 11, to partially encircle the spoke of the wheel, and is provided with a lining of any suitable material, preventing the same from scratching the spoke. The outer end of said jaw or grip is provided with a lug or projec tion 13, forming a finger-grip, through the medium of which the jaw may be adjusted.

14 designates the locking-lever, eccentrically mounted upon the bolt 10 and adapted to hold the jaw or spoke-grip in its adjusted position. To prevent the lateral displacement of the jaw or spoke-grip and locking-lever, the bolt 10 is provided with a nut 15. In order to hold the jaw or spoke=grip in its adjusted position, the lever 14 is formed with a camsurface 16, and when the lever is oscillated upon the bolt by means of the handle 17 the cam-surface is brought to bear against the head or nut 15, forcing the movable jaw against the shank 1, and by oscillating the 10 ver in the opposite direction the jaw or spokegrip is loosened.

It is obvious from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings, that by providing the shank with a rectangular opening its utility is increased and that the construction of the movable jaw or spoke-grip and the locking means therefor provides a jaw which may be quickly operated.

Having thus fully described my invention, what Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-= 1. The combination with a shank, having a head or socket at one end and at the opposite ICO end a bearing-plate,of a movable jaw or spokegrip having an elongated slot whereby the same is slidably secured to said shank through the medium of a headed bolt, a hook at one end of said jaw or spoke-grip to partially encircle a spoke, a finger-grip at the opposite end of said jaw or spoke-grip to adjust the same; and a cam-faced lever to secure said jaw in its adjusted position.

2. The combination with a shank, having a head or socket at one end and at the opposite end a bearing-p1ate,of a movable jaw or spokegrip having an elongated slot whereby the same is slidably secured to said shank through the medium of a headed bolt, a hook at one end of said jaw or spoke-grip to partially encircle a spoke, a finger-grip at the opposite end of said jaw or spoke-grip to adjust the same, and a cam-faced lever eccentrically mounted on said bolt and provided with a handle to oscillate said lever to bring the cam portion thereof under the head of said bolt to bend the said jaw against the shank, looking it in its adjusted position.

3. A wrench comprising a shank having a downwardly and outwardly curved portion and a straight portion, a head or sockethaving tapering inner walls secured to outwardlycurved portion, a rectangular opening in said portion, a bearing plate secured to said straight portion, a movable jaw having an elongated slot whereby the same is slidably secured to said shank upon a head-bolt, a curved portion on one end of said jaw, a finger-grip on the opposite end thereof, a camfaced lever eccentrically mounted on said bolt whereby the jaw is secured in its adjusted position, and means for preventing the parts that come in contact with the wheel from scratching the same, substantially as shown and described.
