GREENLEAF. STACKPOL'E, 0F NEW YORK, N. Y. Letters Patent No. 63,438, dated April 2, 1867; tmtcdated lift/rch 18, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN BIT-ERAGBS.
"dite .r'rlntuir refont to in tlpsc grttns hnelt ma making mi .of tin simu.
TO ALL WHOiiii IT MAY CONCERU:
Be it known that I, GREENLEAF SrAcrcPoL'u, ot the city ot" New York, in the county of New York, in the State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bit-Braces; and I do hereby declare the following to bea full, clear, and exact description ofthe construction andoperation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improvement, with all parts in their proper place, ready to receive abit.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the main body of' the brace before the ring and jaws are attached.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the ring.
Figure 4, a perspective view of the jaws.
Figure 5 js a sectional view oi' the ring and jaws` with a bit held in position for use.
Figure 6 is an end view of the main body of the improvement, showing the socket that receives the bit. Similar letters ot reference indicate like parts in all the figures.
A A are spiral slot-s, starting from points directly opposite each other, and running parallel to each other diagonally about halt` way around the ring M. B shows the outer end ot the jaws extended rea-dy to receive the bit. C shows a projection on the jaws, which passes out through the'slotA A., so that by turning the ring M the jaws may be thrown out or drawn in on a line with the bit. D is a slot. that guides andV keeps there on a line withthc bit. H isa shoulder, against which the inner end oi` the ring rests when the parts are together in their proper places. F F are recesses forming shoulders that are made to press against the outer end of the ring, and hold it in its place by driving a wedge into the Socliet'G, and spreading itl after the ring and jaws have been slipped into their places. A A are the slots as seen before the ring is slipped on or connected to the otherparts. Fig. 4 shows the jaws separated from the other parts, and shows the projections C C, which pass through theslots in the ring when the parts are together,- as shown in iig. 1. Fig. 5 shows a taper on the inside of the ring, making it smaller atthe front eud, wl|ich is for the purpose of causing the jaws to spread as they are moved outward, by pressing their inner ends inward; it also shows the jaws drawn in, holding the bit a. The dotted lines show the jaws extended, ready to receive the bit. In fig. 6 Gis the socket, in which the shank of the bit is held. D D is the end ot' the slots, which guide lthe jaws on a line with the hit. To tighten the outer ends, B, of the jaws upon the bit a, the ring M must be turned to the left, `by which move ment the spiral slots A act on the projection C C to draw thejaws inward into the hit-brace, and at the same time close the ends B of the jaws together by the contactof thejaws with the outer end of the ring. To open the jaws-the ring M is turned in the opposite direction, and the jaws are moved outward and opened.y The opening motion is positive, beinginduced by the cont-act ot' the inner ends, 6, of the jaws against the contract- 'ing interior of the ring M. 'The ring M does not inove endwise, but simply turns and induces the opening and closing of the jaws by moving the latter endwise. The ring cannot be taken off or lost, neither can lthe jaws. prefer to manufacture the parts of malleable cast iron. It allows the socket to he distended successfully to retain the ring and the other parts permanently. The male part Bl of one jaw is let into the female part Bzof the other jaw, as plainlyshown in tig. 4, to insure a unity of action or position of the jaws, and to form a firm, reliable, and cheap hinge for the opening and closing motion.
Having thus described my inventioi, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- I claim the bit-brace constructed and operated substantially as herein described.
