. U ITED- STATES PATENT QFFICEt CHARLES-S H ROF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA! CAN-OPENER.
srncrrroncbron forming part of Letters ratenpno. 634,11 1 dated October 3, 1899. Application filed July 27, 1899. Serial No. 725,224. We model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES S. HOPPER, citizen of the United States,' residing at Philadelphia, (Germ antown,) inv the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Can-Openers, of which the following is a specification;
My invention has relationto a can-opener of the type or class wherein a ring is provided with a central pin or spur and with a cuttingblade arranged radially with respect to the pin or spur; and in such connection it relates to the particular construction and arrangement of the device for said purpose.
The principal objects of my invention are,
first, to providea simple, durable, and efiecte ive can-opener comprising in its construction a ring or disk adapted to be grasped and turned by the hand of the operator, said ring or disk having a centrally-arranged spur or pin adapted to enter the head of the can and having also a radial 'slot in which a knife or cutting implement is adapted to slide toward or away from the spur 01'' pin, and, second, to provide a can-opener comprising in its construction a ring or disk, a pin or spur arranged cent-rally with respect tosaid disk, and a knife or cutting implement comprising a cutting edge depending vertically through a radial slot of said ringv ordisk and having an ofiset or shoulder bearing against the under face of the ring or disk, said cutting edge being carried by a horizontals-rm slotted to the stem of the central pin orspur and adapted'to be clamped or locked to the ring or disk by a thumb-nut when the nut is advanced upon the stem of the pin or spur.
My invention, stated in general terms, coI1-'v perspective View of the knife orcutting im plement, and Fig. 5 is a front View of the cut ting edge of said knife.
Referring to the drawings, a represents a disk or ring having its periphery scalloped, as at a, so-that it may be more readily grasped and turned. The ring or disk a is also provided with a lug a against which the thumb of the operator is pressed in .the turning of the said ring or diska. This disk or ring a is provided with a centrally-arranged spur or pin b, having a pointed end 72, which is adapt ed to enter the head of a can. The stem 12 of the pin 19 extends above the upper face of the ring or disk at and is threaded to receive -a nut h for a purpose-t0 be presently explained.
The ring or disk a is preferably provided with four arms, in one of which, a is arranged a slot a, radial to the central pin or spur b.
The knife or cutting implement comprises a cutting edge d, projecting downwardly through the slot a and having an offset or shoulder 01' bearing against the under side of the slotted arm a as illustrated in Fig. 3.
The cutting edge is adaptedto be slid back and forth in the slot a toward or away from the central pin or spur b, and thus decreases or increases the circular out to be made in the head of the can. The cutting edge all depends from a horizontal shank d which is slotted,
as at [2 to receive the stem-l) of the central pin or spur b. The shank d may thus be moved back and forth over the arm a within the limits prescribed by the length of its slot (Z and when thus moved torequired position it is locked against further movement by screwing down the nut b upon the threaded stem b When so locked, the cutting edge at is. held firmly in a vertical position below the slot a by reason of the fact that it is held by its offset or shoulder d from moving upward Having thus described the nature and objeots of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A oan-opener,oomprising a ring or disk having a radial slot, a pin or spur dependingtcentrally fromthe ring or disk and having a threaded stein, a cutting edge adjustable in and depending vertically through the slot of the ring or disk and having an offset or shoulder bearing against the under face of the ring or disk, a horizontal arm or shank carrying said cutting edge and in slotted engagement substantially as with the stem of the spur or pin, and a nut adapted to be screwed down'upon said arm or s shank to look the same to said ring or disk,
and for the purposes described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my signature in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
CHAS. S. HOPPER.
