Description

No. 609,406. Patented 'Aug. 23, I898} .1. BRADY.
CAN OPENER AND ICE PICK.
(Application filed Sept. 11, 1897.)
(No Model.)
WITNESSES //v VEN T0}? NI'IE *rArns JOHN BRADY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
CAN-OPEN ER AND ICE-PICK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 609,406, dated August 23, 1898.
Application filed September 11, 1897. Serial No. 651,390. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN BRADY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, (Blackwells Island,) county of New York, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Can-0pener and Ice-Pick, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. i
' My invention relates to an improved combined can-opener and ice-pick, the object thereof being to provide an article which is cheap, durable, and simple in construction and adapted for use on all sizes of cans.
The invention will be hereinafter fully described, and specifically set forth in the annexed claim.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective View of my invention, showing it in operative position on the can; and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same.
In the practice of my invention I employ a bar B, having an upwardly-extending loop or hood B, adapted to carry a revoluble cuttingdisk I), mounted on an axis b, secured in the hood B. The downwardly-extending end B of the bar B carries a horizontal handle D, with which to revolve the bar B, and will hereinafter be referred to. The bar B is further provided with a series of perforations B adapted for engagement with the prong or spur O of the removable handle 0. This spur acts as a pivot around which the bar B revolves. It is also used independently as an ice-pick when removed from the bar B.
In operation the bar B is placed diametrically across the top of a can A, and the prong C of the removable handle 0 is entered into one of the holes B of the bar B at or near the center of the can A and forced downward through the can, thereby acting as a pivot about which the bar B is made to revolve by applying pressure to the handle D, causing the disk 19 to cut a circular piece from the top of the can. The prong O of the handle 0 is long and tapering and adapted to be used, further, as an ice-pick.
Having thus described my invention,wh.at I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A combined can-opener and ice-pick, embodying a bar provided with'a series of holes therein, a yoke formed on one end of said bar, a revolving cutterjournaled in said yoke, an arm extending downwardly from said yoke and provided with a suitable handle, and an ice-pick adapted to enter one of said holes and pierce the metal of the can and serve as a pivot for the cutter, substantially as shown and described.
