Be it known that I, FRANK HOYT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Petoskey, in the county of Emmett and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Can-Openers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My inventionhas relation to improvements in rotary can-openers, and the object is to provide asimple, convenient, and effective device for safely and rapidly opening cans.
To this end the novelty consists in the' construction, combination, and arrangement of the same, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings the same reference-characters indicate the same parts of the invention.
Figure 1 is a perspective View of my improved can-opener. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
1 represents abracket consisting of the ver tical rectangular standard 2 and the horizontal parallel jaws 3 4. The inner face of the jaw 3 is formed with one or more integral depending spurs 5 and the lower jaw 4 with the adjustable thumb-screw 6 for detachably securing the can-opener to the projecting edge of a table or any other suitable support.
7 represents a vertical adjustable carriage consisting of the sleeve 8, provided with a vertical rectangular recess 9, adapted to loosely encompass the standard 2 and have a free vertical movement thereon. The head of this carriage 7 is provided with a horizontal recess 10, and 12 represents a vertical shaft journaled in said head and extending through the recess, the upper end of the shaft terminating in a horizontal crank 13, provided with an operating-handle 14;
15 represents a vertical conical feed-roller, its tapering face formed with a series of parallel grooves l6.
17 represents an integral depending arm on the front end of the head 7, and its inner face is formed with a vertical semiconical recess 18 to receive a conical guide-roller 19,,
to the inner face of the arm 17 by rivets 23 24: represents a friction or bearing roller, journaled on a horizontal shaft 25, fixed on the upper face of the arm 3 and which serves as a support for the bottom edge of the can to rotate upon.
The operation of the device is as follows: The carriage 7 is raised to about the limit of the standard 2 and a can placed under it with its bottom edge resting on the roller 24, and the carriage is then dropped or forced down with sufficient force for the V-shaped point of the knives to penetrate the top of the can contiguous to its edge. The handle 14 is then rotated and the rollers 15 and 19 carry the can around, so that the knife-blade cuts a disk from the top of the can, the roller 19 at the same time turning the annular flange on the can downwardly and inwardly into the mouth of the can.
Although I have specifically described the construction and relative arrangement of the several elements of my invention, I do not desire to be confined to the same, as such changes or modifications may be made as clearly fall within the scope of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The bracket 1 formed with the integral rectangular standard 2 and the horizontal parallel jaws 3 and 4, the bearing-roller 24 journaled in said arm 3, and the thumb-screw 6, in combination with the vertical carriage '7, formed with the vertical rectangular recess 9, adapted to encompass said standard and having the horizontal recess 10, formed in its upper end, and provided with an integral depending arm 17, having a recess 18, a conical guide roller 19, mounted in said recess, diverging knife-blades 21 22 fixed to the inner-face of said arm, and the vertical crankshaft 12, journaled in the upper end of said carriage, the fluted conical feed-roller 15 secured upon said shaft, rotating in said recess 10, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
