Be it known that I, MEINRAD L. SGHILLY,
a citizen of the United States, residingat Pierron, Vin the county of Bond and Stateof Illinois, have inventedV new and usefulV Improvements in Sa'uer-Kraut Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention vis an improved machine for cutting sauerkraut, slicing vegetables and other like commodities, and consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed. f i a One object of my invention is tofprovide an improved machine of this Character embodying an adjustable support'adapted to hold the machine on thetop of atub, bucket or other like vessel of any ordinary size.
Another object is'to effect improvements in the construction of the machine whereby the same is adapted to be hingedly connected at one side to a tub or barrel and, hence, to
be lifted therefrom when it is desired to tamp or press down the contents of the tub or barrel. j

In the accompanying drawings; Figure 1 is an elevation of a cutting machine constructed in accordance withmy invention. Fig. 2 is a Vertical sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan of the same. Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view'on the plane indicated by the line b -Z of Fig. 1. Fig. 5v is a detail elevation showing one of the clamps and a contiguous part of the frame which is pivotally mounted thereon. Fig. 6 is a detail sectional view of the cutter.
In the embodiment of my invention, I provide a cylindrical body or hopper 1 in which the cabbages or other vegetable to be per at a point at right angles to the stopv plate 2 are a pair, of upwardly extending spcifiationpr Letters Patent. At one side of the hopper at a point opposite i thes'top plate 2 is a-frame 8'which comprises a Vertical arm 9, the upperv end of which? is curved' inwardly and riveted or otherwise secured to the hopper as at lOfand a pair of oppositely: extending and substantially horizvontally arranged arms 11 which also curve inwardlyland the ends of which are attached to thel hopper as at 12;
'At the intersection of the arms 9 and 11 is a bearingl for a 'drving shaft l-L The arms 11 are provided at suitable points with pairs-V of downwardly extending spaced lugs 15 between which a pair of substantially inverted U-shaped clamps 16 areV pivotally mounted as at` l7`and-each of the said clamps is provided with a 'threaded opening in its outer arm or jaw'and with aaclamping screw 18 engaging said opening. On the side of the body 1 opposite the frame 8 is a radially arranged outwardly extending supporting 'i arm or bar 19; which is provided in one side with alongitudinal recess 20 in which is formedV with a substantially inverted U- shaped clamp 24, the outer arm or jaw of which `hasa threaded opening anda'clamping screw 25 in said opening.
An, inclined brace '26 eXtends upwardly froma point near the outer end of the arm 19 and has its upper end secured to the body or hopper 1 as at 27. The arms 11 of the frame 8 are provided with supporting guides 28` which eXtend downwardly and inwardly and the lower portions of which are somewhat below the level of the bottoni of the hopper and the arm 20 has a similar supporting guide 29.
The cutter 80 comprises a wheel-shaped frame and a series of segmental vinclined cutter hlades 85. The frame comprises a rim 31 having beveled gear teeth on its upper side which are engaged by a beveled gear 14a on the driving' shaft 14. This rim is provided on its inner side with annular fianges 31'L and 31b which are spaced apart and the said rim, which bears on the supporting guides 28, is connected by radial 81d. e A Vertical shaft 32 which is mounted in the bearingV 3 passes through a central ,opening in the ub'member and'is provided at its lower end with a winged head which bears'against the lower side of thel hub member. The segmental cutter blades 35 have their inner ends secured on theV upper end of the hub member by means of screws 311 and have their outer ends-arranged. inthe space betweenthefianges 31a and lb and are'engaged on their upper and; lower sides by screws Bleand lfwhich respectively eni ,gage threaded lopenings in said upper and lower fianges, the said screws supporting vthe outter blades and enabling them to be inclinedetransversely'so that the beveled cutting; edge at ithe front side of each cuttr blade is spaced above vthe'rear side of the next eutter` blade in front thereo in the dilrectio'n in wliiehthe "cutter rotates and the said: screws enable thesecutterV ,blades to. be adjusted tjo any requiredjangle. When it is desired to tamp the contents ofV the vessel from time to time, the screw 25 should be loosened so as to dis'engage one side of the tub or vessel and the machine can then be'turned upwai'dly on vits pivots 117 out of the 'way without the vnecessity of entirely removing it from the tub or vessel, the clamps 16 remaining attached'to the tub or vessel and forming hinge connections between the` Cutting machine and; thel tub or vessel, as will be understood. By adjusting the arm '21 the machine may be adapted to fit and ,be Vsep cured on a tubor vessel of any size- Agvegetable cutter comprising a cylindrical hopp'er, frames seeured to opposite sides of said hopper, supports' depending from saidframes, a toothedl eircular frame resting on said supports, a hub fornied at the center of said ciroular frame, a [pair of superiin-- posed annular fianges formed on said vCircular frame, segmen-tal cutter blades secured to said huband having their peripheral edges interposed'between said flanges, screwspassingl through' saidv fianges for defiectingportions of said blades, and means coperating with the teeth of said frame for turning said blades.
