Thisinvention relates t head-rests for den# tal and other purposes; and thepbject is to. simplify the construction, increase the con.

venience and utility, and provide a device of this character which is capable otra practically universal range of adjustment.

To this endthe invention consists in the construction, combination, and` arrangement f of the' severalelements of the device, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

13 13 denote the pad-plates, to which the pads 14 14' are fixed, and they conform in shape to the arm-plates 8 8', to which they are pivoted by the rivets 132, and are secured in theiradjusted positions by the thumb-screws l15 15, which pass through the segmental slots 84 in the arm-plates and extend into the padplates.

The various adjustments of the rest are so plainly illustrated in the several figures as to be readily comprehended by those skilled in the art, and consequently do not require an extended description.

Briefly stated, what maybe termed the coarse or preliminary adjustment is attained'through the mediu m of the hand-screws 8 and 8 and the fine or secondary adjustment by means of the thumb-screw I2, and the final adjustment to conduce to the greater comfort of the patients position by means of the thumb-screws 15.

In Fig. 16 I have shown a rigid form of padsupporting frame which is adjustably secured in the same manner in the horizontal arm 44 of the tubular vbracket 4.

The accompanying drawings show my in-y vention in the best form noW known to me; but many changes in the details might be made Within the skill of a good mechanic Without departing from the spirit of my invention as set forth in the claims at the end of this specification.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, 1s-

1. The combination, in ahead-rest, of asupporting-plate, oppositely-disposed cran k-arms pivotally connected to said plate, independent pads pivotally connected to said crankarms, means for operating the crank-arms in unison and a locking device adapted to simultaneously lock said arms in position, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. A dental head-rest, comprising the fixed support, a carriage having a sliding engagement with said support and terminating in a spherical knob, a bracket mounted on said knob, and a'hand-screW extending through said bracket, knob and carriage and abutting against said fixed support to clamp or fix the carriage in place, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

3. A dental head-rest comprising a carriage formed with a spherical knob and a pad-supporting frame also formed with a similar knob; in combination with a right-angular bracket encompassing said knobs, a pair of independent rods arranged at right angles and loosely mounted in said bracket with their outer ends abutting against said knobs, and a clamping-screw having a threaded engagement with said bracket, and having its free end abutting against the contiguous ends of said rods, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. 4. A dental head-rest, comprising a traveling carriage, a bracket mounted on said carriage, and a pad-supporting frame mounted on said bracket, a pair of rods loosely mounted in said carriage at approximately right angles to each other With their inner ends in contact and with their free ends impinging on the oar riage and frame respectively, and a clampingscrew havingathreaded engagementwith said bracket in the plane of the angle bisecting the meeting ends of said rods, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

5. In a dental head-rest, a pad-supporting frame, comprising a shank terminating in a head, a pair of arms having their hubs formed with intermeshing gears pivoted in said head and means for simultaneously locking said intermeshing gear-hubs in position, substantially as and for the purpose Set forth.

6. In a dental head-rest, a pad-supporting frame,comprisingashank formedwithahead, a pair of arms having their contiguous ends pivoted in said head, and a clamping-screw carriedvby said head and adapted to simultaneously engage the contiguous pivoted ends of said arms, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

7. In a dental head-rest, a pad-supporting frame,comprisingashankformed Withahead, a pair of arms having their contiguous ends pivotally mounted in said head, a pair of counterpart pads or cushions pivoted on said arms and means for simultaneously adjusting said pads independently of the position of said arms, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

8. In a dental head-rest, a pad-supporting frame,comprising a shank formed With ahead, a pair of coacting arms pivoted in said head, arm-plates pivoted to the free ends of said arms, and the pad-plates pivotally secured to purpose set forth.

10. In a dental head-rest, a pad-supporting frame, comprising the head, the arms pivoted in the head, the arnmplates pivoted in the free ends of said arms, the padfplates pivoted to said arm-plates, and means for independently 15 adj listing said pad-plates in their own planes, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
