UNTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN CLARENCE GARVEY, OF SEATTLE, l/VASHINGTON.
THAWING-HOOD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 633,691, dated September 26, 1899. Application filed March 8,1898. Serial No. 673,144. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J OHN CLARENCE GAR- VEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Seattle, in the county of King and State of lVashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Thawing-Hoods, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to produce a collapsible thawing-hood which may be easily taken apart and put together; and it consists of the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view of a thawing-hood embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same; Fig. 3, an enlarged detail section of a corner-joint of the hood; Fig. 4, an enlarged detail section of a straightjoint of the hood; Fig. 5, a top plan View showing the thawing-hood when put together in a different form from that shown in Fig. 1.
The thawing-hood is composed, preferably, of plates A, of sheet-iron, lined with asbestos. The edges where these plates adjoin each other are provided with a back-turned lip or flange a, over which catches B B are slipped to hold the plates in the form of a hood. The catches B are designed for the right-angled or corner joints, while the catches B serve for the straight joints, and both may be provided with rolled ends I), which serve as handles. At their lower edges the side plates are provided with an outwardly-extending flange a, on which the vertical catches rest, and are thus prevented from slipping down and becoming disengaged.
The top of the hood is composed of two plates, each of which is provided with alidded opening C for the admission of a burner D, which is preferably a hydrocarbon-burner of any of the usual forms and supplied with fuel through pipe (Z. The side plates are provided with vertical sockets E 'E E &c., in which the wheel-carrying arms F are adj ustably secured by means of set-screws f. These sockets are arranged as shown in Fig. 1, so as to permit the form of hood and the direction in which it may be rolled to be varied according to the size and shape of shaft desired. For example, the parts shown in Fig. 1, with the addition of two sides A and A and the removal of sides A and A, may be assembled to form a hood of the shape shown in Fig. 5, which is adapted to be used in digging a shaft which is exceptionally long and narrow.
I claim The combination of a collapsible thawing hood, composed of plates of non-combustible material, the adjoining edges of which are provided with back-turned lips or flanges a,
held together at the corners by catches B and at the straight joints by catches 13 with wheel-carrying arms F, adapted to be secured in the sockets E, E E, &c., carried by the side plates of the hood, substantially as and 'Witnesses:
W. G. GARvEY, W. M. PINDELL.
