EUGENE E. ALLEN, OF SANTA ANA, CALIFORNIA.
WEED-BURNER.
Application filed June 20, 1910.
'1 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EUGENE E. ALLEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Santa Ana, in the county of Orange and the State of California, have invented a new and useful Weed-Burner.
This invention relates to improvements in weed burners and it proposes a construction which is especially applicable to the machine shown in my prior U. S. Patent, No. 834,701, of October 80, 1906, and which is designed for use more particularly with heavy, unrefined, mineral oils.
The object of the invention is to provide a burner construction for especial use in the environments stated which shall be capable of developing and maintaining a flame hav ing a relatively intense heat.
Embodiments of the invention are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a form of burner which is especially designed for wide areas. Fig. 2 is a view showing a burner nozzle which is employed as an element of the improved burner.
Similar characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several vlews.
The improved burner includes essentially a hood and one or more burner nozzles through which the heavy mineral oils used as fuel are forced under pressure.
In the construction shown, the burner hood is of inverted elongated trough-shaped form, being open at its lower end and having its side walls flaring downwardly. The hood is made in a suitable manner of refractory material such as firebrick, the end walls of the hood being supported by suitable strips 2 and the hood as a whole being reinforced by a circumscribing band 3. liquid fuel is conducted through a pipe 4 which extends longitudinally through the hood near the apex thereof and is provided with a plurality of depending burner nozzles 5. These are shown in detail in Fig. 2. Each nozzle consists of a relatively short tubular section 6 which is joined to the pipe i by a suitable coupling and into which a portion of the liquid passing through the pipe 4 flows. The nozzles 5 are each provided at their lower ends with plates 7, which have fuel discharge openings 8. The openings 8 are drilled obliquely and outwardly, so that the flame is caused to spread out in contact with the refractory side walls of the hood 1, which side walls become very highly heated and serve to maintain the flame directed thereagainst. The hood is provided at each side thereof and near its apex with a row of air openings 9, through which air is drawn to sustain the flame. The hood, together with its associated parts, may be supported from any convenient part of the machine by suitable hangers 10.
I claim A burner of the type set forth comprising a refractory heat retaining hood having an inverted V-shape in cross section and pro vided with downwardly flaring symmetrical walls and with air inlet openings near the upper end .thereof, and a burner nozzle inclosed in the upper portion of the hood and having liquid fuel discharge openings obliquely directed toward the flaring walls whereby the flames are projected against said walls, the latter deflecting the flames downwardly.
