Description
HENRY IV. KIMM, OF JOBES, IOIVA.
TRACE-SUPPORTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 633,649, dated September 26, 1899.
Application filed May 3l, 1899. Serial No. 718,889. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it 77u07/ con/cern.-
Be it known that l, HENRY W. KIMM, a citizen of the UnitedStates, residing at Jobes, in the county of Guthrie and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Trace-Carrier, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to trace-carriers, and has for its object to provide improved means for preventing accidental displacement ofthe trace-eyes from the trace-carrier.
To this end the present invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings, andV particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the trace-carrier. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view thereof. Fig. is a transverse sectional View on the line xx, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the guide-bar. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the slidable cross-head.
Corresponding parts are designated by like reference characters in all the figures of the drawings.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, 1 designates the frame of the carrier, having the loops 2 at the opposite longitudinal ends of the frame and the transversely opposite loops 3, the former loops 2 being adapted to receive the hip-straps of a harness and the loops 3 to receive the back-strap and crupper, respectively. Supported upon the frame and located above the respective loops 3 is a pair of bridge-pieces 6, and intermediate of the latter at opposite sides of the f rame are hooks 7, havin their bills extending inwardly and provided with notches S in the lower sides thereof. Diagonal braces 9 extend from the opposite ends of the lower frame 1, and crossed at a central point within the frame and eX- tending upwardly from the point of crossing of the braces is a socket 10.
Extending transversely across the upper faces of the bridge-pieces G and removably connected thereto by means of suitable fastenings 11 is a transverse bar or plate 12, having a central opening 13 formed therethrough and carrying a pendent tube 14C, communieating with said opening. This tube is provided with opposite slots 15, alined longitudinally of the frame of the device, and is reduced at its lower end, as at 16, which reduced portion is adapted to be received within the socket 10. Slidable within the tube le is a cross-head 17, having a central operatingstem 18, adapted to project upwardly through the opening 13,-formed in the transverse bar 12, and the opposite ends of the cross-head provide tongues 19, which project laterally through the opposite slots l5, whereby the cross-head is guided in its movement. Inclosed within the tube 14 is a coiled spring 20, bearing at one end against the bottom of the socket 10 and at its upper end against the lower side of the cross-head 17 for the purpose of holding the latter at the limit of its upward movement with the ends of the tongues 19 seated in the respective notches S, formed in the under sides of the hooks 7.
It will be understood that the trace-eyes are adapted to be engaged with the respective hooks 7 in the usual manner, the cross-head 17 being depressed by the operation to permit of the engagement of the trace-eyes with the hooks. After the trace-eyes'have been engaged with the hooks the cross-head will resume its normal position by the action of the spring 20, whereby the tongues 19 will be engaged with the under sides of the hooks 7, thus closing the opening between the free ends of the respective hooks and the transverse bar 12, and thereby preventing accidental displacement of the trace-eyes from the hooks. IVhen it is desired to disengage the trace-eyes, it is simply necessary to press downwardly upon the thumb-piece formed by the upper projecting end of the stem 1S, whereby the cross-head is depressed and the tongues 19 are disengaged from the hooks 7, and the trace-eyes are thereby free to be removed froin the hooks'. It is preferable to have the free ends of the hooks 7 alined below the transverse bar 12, so that the tongues 19 may engage the hooks before reaching the said bar, whereby the pressure of the spring may hold the tongues effectively in engagement with the hooks; also, the operating-stem 1S is long enough to permit of thecross-head 17 engaging with the top of the socket lO before the upper end of the stem becomes disengaged from the opening 13, formed through the transverse bar 12, so that the upper end IOO of the stem may not catch or hang against the under face of the bar and prevent the cross-head from rising into its normal position.
By reason of the bar l2 being detachably connected to the bridge-pieces 6 any of the operating parts of the device may be replaced when necessary.
The construction and arrangement, as hereinbefore described, provides an effective and durable tracecarrier, in which the hooks thereof may be effectively closed to prevent accidental displacement of the trace-eyes from said hooks and the movable parts may be readily replaced when worn or broken.
Changes in the form, proportion, size, and the minor details of construction within the scope of the appended claims may be resorted to without departing` from the spirit or sacriflcing any of the advantages of this invention.
l. In a trace-carrier, the combination with a frame having opposite ixed hooks, of a guide-bar located transversely intermediate the hooks, provided with a vertical opening and a pendent tube having opposite longitudinal slots, a vertically-movable cross-head located within the tube and having its opposite ends projecting outwardly through the respective slots in the tube, and an operatingstem carried by the cross-head and projecting upward through the opening in the guidebar, the opposite projecting ends of the crosshead being adapted to form tongues which are normally held in engagement with the under sides of the respective hooks, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a trace-carrier, the combination with the frame thereof having opposite fixed hooks and a socket located intermediate of the hooks, of a guide-bar located transversely between the hooks alined above the socket and provided intermediate of its ends with a vertical opening, a pendent tube in communication with said opening, provided with opposite longitudinal slots and having its lower end seated within the socket, a verticallymovable cross-head arranged within the tube having its opposite ends projecting outwardly through the respective slots formed in the tube, and provided with an operating-stem projecting upwardly through the opening formed in the guide-bar, and a coiled spring housed within the tube and bearing at one end against the bottom of the socket and at the other end against the lower side of .the cross-head, whereby the latter is normally held in engagement with the hooks, substantially as shown and described.
3. In a trace-carrier, the combination with the frame thereof, of hooks supported thereby, transversely opposite bridge-pieces provided upon the frame and extending longitudinally of the same, a guide-bar removably secured to the bridge-pieces, extending transversely between the hooks, and provided with a central opening, and a vertically-movable crosshead, having an operating-stein projecting upwardly through the opening in the guidebar, the opposite'ends of the cross-head being normally in engagement with the under sides of the respective hooks, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. In a trace-carrier, the combination with a frame, having a socket located centrally thereof, of opposite hooks supported upon the frame, transversely opposite bridge-pieces provided upon the frame and extending longitudinally at opposite sides of the hooks, a guide-bar connected to rthe bridge-pieces,
.transversely between the hooks, and provided intermediate of its ends with a vertical opening, a tube pendent from the guide-bar,
and provided with opposite longitudinal slots alined with the hooks, the lower end of the tube being situated within the socket, a vertically-movable cross-head received within the tube, having its opposite ends projecting through the slots and in normal engagement with the respective hooks, and provided with an operating-stern projecting upwardly through the opening in the guide-bar, and a coiled spring housed within the tube and adapted to hold the cross-head in its normal elevated position, substantially as shown and described.
In testimong that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
HENRY W1 KIMM.
