SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 633,459, dated September 19, 1899.

To all w/tmn it may concern:
Be it known thatI, JoHND. JORDAN, acitizen of the United States, residing at Eureka Springs, in the county of Carroll and State of Arkansas, have invented a new and useful File-Box, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to. improvements in file-boxes.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of file-boxes and to provide a simple and comparativelyinexpensive one adapted to have its sides and ends fold down flat in the same plane as its bottom and capable of enabling its filing-pin to be readily removed when the sides and ends are folded downward to facilitate handling prescriptions and disposing of them after the box has been filled.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure 1' is a-perspective view of a file-case constructed in accordance with this invention and shown closed. Fig. 2 is a perspective view, the sides being folded down in the same plane as the bottom. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the removable filing-pin. Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view illustrating the manner of mounting the eye on the bottom of the file-box. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional view, the box being closed.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawrugs.
1 designates a file-box provided with a removable cover 2 and having its sides 3 and ends 4 connected with its bottom 5 by flexible hinges 6 and the said sides and ends have their vertical and lower horizontal edges 3 and 4 beveled or mitered to fit each other and the beveled edges 6 of the bottom, whereby the sides and ends are adapted when arranged in a vertical position to form dustproof joints to prevent access of dust to the interior of the box. The box, which may be constructed of pasteboard or any other suitable material, has its hinges preferably constructed of fabric and the top or cover 2 is The bottom of the box is provided with an eye 8, constructed of suitable material and receiving an arm 9 of a filing pin or wire 10, whereby the latter is detachably mounted on the bottom of the box and is adapted to be readily removed for the purpose of facilitating the handling of the prescriptions or other contents of the box should it be desired to remove them therefrom. The eye is preferably constructed of a strip of metal having its end portions or shanks 11 embedded in the bottom of the box and the filing-pin is preferably constructed of a single piece of wire, which is coiled at thelower end of the pinto form ahorizontal loop 12, which constitutes a base and is adapted to support the pin in a perpendicular position. The loop 12 is preferably circular and the lower terminal of the wire is extended beyond the same to form the arm 9, the arm being located at the front side of the pin and the circular loop being located at the opposite side thereof. The loop or ring is adapted to prevent the filing-pin from tilting'in either direction, and the eye is spaced from one end of the box a sufficient distance to receive the loop-shaped base 12, which is retained against movement by the adjacent end 4 when the box is closed, whereby the arm 9 cannot become accidentally disengaged from the eye. When the sides and ends are folded or swung downward, the filing-pin can be readily removed-to facilitate placing a prescription on it or removing the same therefrom or for any other purpose. The flexible hinges 6, which connect the sides and ends to the bottom of the box, consist of sheets of fabric arranged on the inner and outer faces of the parts, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 5 of the accom panying drawings, and the box is d esigned to be lined with tinted paper.
The invention has the following advantages: The file-box, which is simple and inexpensive in construction, is light, strong, and durable, and while it is adapted to form a dust-proof receptacle for prescriptions, letters, and the like it is capable of being quickly opened to afford access to the same, and the filing-pin is readily removable. The filing-pin, which is detachably mounted on the bottom of the box, is simple and easily constructed,-and the base, which is formed by bending the wire of the pin, prevents the latter from tilting in either direction, and the adjacent end at prevents the arm from becoming disengaged from the eye of the bottom of the box. The filebox when the filing-wire is removed is adapted to be used as an ordinary box, and when the cover is removed the sides and ends will be retained in a vertical position by a band of rubber, with which each box in use is designed to be provided.
Changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
WVhat is claimed is 1. A device of the class described com prising a box having its sides and ends hinged at their lower edges to the bottom and adapted to swing upward and downward, an eye mounted on the bottom adjacent to one end of the box, and a filing-pin having an arm detachablyfitting in the eye and retained in such engagement by the adjacent end, the latter being adapted to swing upward and downward to lock and release the filing-pin, substantially as described.
2. Adevice of the class described comprising a box having its sides and ends hinged at their lower edges to the bottom, an eye mounted on the bottom adjacent to one end of the box, and a filing-pinprovided at its lower end with an arm to engage the eye and hav ing a supporting-loop adapted to maintain it in a vertical position, said loop being arranged to be engaged by the adjacent end of the box to retain the arm in the eye and adapted to be released when the end is swung downward, substantially asdescribed.
