I NITED TA PATENT FFICE.
RUD OIJPH FRICK, OF BURLINGTON, IOWA.
GRATER FOR NUTMEGS, 84,0.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 633,188, dated September 19, 1899. Appliciation filed February 3, 1898. Serial No- 668,946. (No model.)
T0 aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, RUDOLPH FRIOK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Burlington, in the county of Des Moines and State of Iowa, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in-Graters forNutmegs and the Like, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a new and useful improvement'in graters for nutmegs and the like, and has for its object to provide an exceedingly simple and elfective device which will automatically feed the nutmeg to the grating-surface and in which the nutmeg may remain when not being operated upon and without it being contaminated by surrounding objects.
A further object of my invention is to provide for the storing of more than one nutmeg within the body of the grater and in such manner that no care will be required upon the part of the operator to continue the grating of one nutmeg and following up the process upon another.
With these ends in view this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinaftersetforth and then specifically designated by the claims.
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same the'construction and operation will now be described in detail, referring to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a device made in accordance with my improvement; Fig. 2, a front View thereof, and Fig. 3 a section showing a nutmeg in place to be operated upon.
In carrying out my invention as here embodied, A represents the body of the device, having a barrel B formed therewith, and in this barrel is mounted a cylinder C, the surface of which is roughened for the proper grating of the nutmeg, while the crank-handle D is operated for the revolving of the cylinder, as will be readily understood. To the body is hinged a cover E, having a spring F secured to the under side thereof, one member of said spring extending forward and carrying a presser-shoe G, so that when the cover is in its closed position and a nutmeg placed within the body this shoe will bear upon said nutmeg and continually force it against the grating-surface, so that when the cylinder is revolved the grating of the nutmeg will be accomplished. In order that the nutmeg may be properly guided a rib H is located within the body, as clearly shown in Fig. 8, and the cover is held in its closed position by a suitable bail I, pivoted thereto and adapted to crank and cylinder, so that access maybe had to the surface to cleanse the same.
From this description it will be readily seen that to operate the device it is only necessary to swing open the cover, place one or more nutmegs therein, then swing the cover closed and secure it in position, which will cause the presser-shoe to bear upon the nutmegs with snfiicient force to hold them in contact with the grating-surface, and thereafter the body of the device may be grasped in one hand, while the crank is revolved with the other and the disintegrated nutmeg properly'directed to the point desired.
When the grateris not in use, it may be laid aside and yet the nutmegs therein protected from surrounding objects and the grater always be ready for immediate use. A suitable bail may be provided for suspending the de- Vice from a hook or nail.
In order to prevent the possibility of th nutmeg when having been reduced to small siZe from passing around the cylinder between the barrel, I provide a roughened stop N, which lies in such close proximity to the cylinder as to preclude the possibility of the nutmeg, unless disintegrated into exceedingly small particles, from passing this point, thus avoiding the choking of the device.
, Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful is 1. In a device of the character described,a body having a hinged top, a spring-arm having one end secured to the top on its under side to swing therewith, the free end of the spring extending diagonally across the body and carrying a shoe, a grating-cylinder over which the shoe is suspended, normally in close proximity therewith, and adapted to exert pressure on the nutmeg while being acted on by the grater, a bail on the cover adapted to engage a lug 0n the body to hold the lid against the action of the spring and a guiderib attached to one wall of the casing, as and for the purpose described.
2. In combination, a body having a lid, a spring-arm secured to the lid and adapted to extend diagonally across the body and carrying a shoe, a grating-cylinder with which the RUDOLPH FRICK.
