Application filed August 4, 1921.
To all WJItOWZ- it may concern:
Be it known that T, ATTILIO CoN'rE, a subject of the King of Italy, residing at No. 1276 Avenida de Mayo, Buenos Aires, Argentina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Graters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in ,cgraters and substantially has for its object an improved device of this kind tor household use, for grating cheese and other substances, provided with certain novel features which render the device more practical, and cleaner, than the graters now known.
Said improvements essentially consist in providing a grater of ordinary design with a hinged cover which, when open, serves for the reception of the grated material, and when in its closed position, protects the grating surface against contact with the fingers, or prevents the same from being soiled by flies, mice or the like. Besides the grater proper is provided at each side with a flange forming a groove'which prevents the grated material from being scattered to the sides.
In order that the invention may be readily understood and carried into practice, a preferred embodiment of the same has been shown in the accompanying drawing wherein Figure 1, illustrates a perspective of the improved grater, with its cover opened, while Figure 2 shows a side view with the cover in its closed position.
The same letters of reference have been used to indicate like or corresponding parts in both figures.
The letter a indicates a tablet of wood or other material, to which is secured the grater c. the tablet being provided with a handle 2). The grater c is of ordinary design, namely, piece of sheet metal provided with holes the edges of which form the grating teeth which are curved to a semi-cylindrical shape. It has a lateral extension formed integral with said piece of sheet metal. The extension is flat at d, where the same is nailed or otherwise secured to'the tablet a, and rises at 6, so as to form flanges which prevent the grated material from being scattered laterally.
7', indicates the cover, preferably made of non-oxidizing sheet metal. The cover is Specification of Letters Patent.

shaped after the manner of a box, with a bottom and side walls, the forward end being'spoon shaped in order to facilitate the discharge of the grated material.
The cover is mounted by means of a hinge at 5 on the tablet a, the latter being of lesser thickness at its lower part in order to allow of the cover being positiond in its open position somewhat to the rear of the grater, so that the grated material. will be prevented from getting into the hinge.
The nose h. 01 the spoon also serves to engage with the spring latch 2', to hold the cover in its closed position.
It is evident that several modifications of detail can be made in the construction of the grater, the essential features of the invention being clearly set forth in the following claims.
l/Vhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A device of the class described comprising in combination, a supporting ele merit, a separate element having a grating surface secured to the supporting element and projecting outwardly therefrom, a member pivoted to one of said elements and movable relatively thereto, and constituting in one position a receptacle for the grated material and in a second position adapted to be folded against said supporting element to constitute a protective cover for the grating element. v
2. A device of the class described comprising in combination, a fiat tablet, a member having a grating surface secured to the tablet, a cover hinged to the tablet and forming therewith a protective casing for the grating member when in its closed position and a receptaclev for grated material when in its open position.
A device of the class described C0111- prising' in combination, a fiat tablet, a member having; a grating surface secured to the tablet, flanges at each side of the grating member for deflecting, grated material, a. cover hinged to the tablet and forming therewith a protective casing for the grating member when in its closed position and a receptacle for grated material when in its open position.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature.
ATTILIO CONTE.
