' MEAT-GRINDER ATTACHMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
To all whom it may concern Beit known that I, REMER R. REID, a c1t1- I zen of the United States, residing at Atlanta,
in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Meat- Grinder Attach-v ments; and
I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to meat grinder attachments, designed for the purpose of attachment to any of the standard grinding machines, for the purpose of rendering the machine a double grinder, or one in which the materials to be ground are passed but once through the machine.
Another object of the invention is to pro- -vide an attachment for the ordinary standmachines, to convert said maard grinding and to provide chine into a double grinder,
means whereby the attachment may bequickly connected to themacliine and detached therefrom when it is desired to use the machine as a single grinder.
In the use of machines of this character, it has been customary to feed the materials twice through the machine in order to have the materials ground as finely as is desired.
The object of my invention is to provide an attachment of simple construction which can be quicklyconnected to a machine to obviate the necessity of feeding the materials twice through in order to have them ground as finely as required.
These and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,
taken through the outer end of the discharge spout of an ordinary meat grinder and showing this invention in section connected to said diseharge end, Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view showing thestud for connecting the attachment to the ordinary meat grinder, Fig. 3 is a plan view of one of the cutters, Fig. 4 is an end view of the attachment, Fig. '5 is an end view of the bushing, Fig. 6 is a plan View of one of the perforated disks, and Fig. 7 is an end view of the shell.
Referring to the drawing the numeral 1 designates the discharge end of an ordinary meat grinder, the usual cutter 2 being mounted on a squared stud, and for the pur- Patented (Dot. 27, 19141.
pose of this invention a square stud 3 of somewhat longer construction is substituted for the ordinary stud in the discharge end of the machine. The perforated disk 4: is mounted on ,a bushing 5 through which the stud 3 passes. v
The ordinary feeding screw, or worm in the discharge member 1 is secured to the threaded end 8 of the stud 3 with which it rotates. The shell 9 is provided with the usual interior corrugations 10, and said shell is provided with a flange 11 on its inner end, while its outer end is exteriorly screw threaded. Dowel pins 12 extend from the flange 11 and are fitted in apertures or sockets in the outer end of the discharge tube 1. A threaded ring 13, provided with a flange 14,-which engages the flange 11 of the shell 9 is fitted to the screw threads 15 at the outer end of the discharge tube 1, and to facilitate the attachment of the ring 13 projections 16 are provided to serve as finger holds. The inner end of the feed screw 6 is formed with an angular recess receiving the angular outer end 7 of the stud 3 whereby these parts are locked for rotation. The outer end of the feed screw 6 is provided with a threaded socket in which the threaded portion 17 of a stud having a square portion 18, is fitted, and said stud is provided with a smooth round outer end 19.
The boss 20 of the auxiliary cutter 21 is provided with a squared aperture fitted to'the squared portion 18 of the stud, while the rounded end 19 of .said stud is fitted in a perforate disk 22. The disk 22 is provided with projecting dowel pins 23 removably seated in apertures in the front end of the shell.9. The disk 22 is held in place in the discharge end of the shell 9 by means of a threaded ring 24:, having an annular flange 25'which bears against the end ofthe shell 9 and against the outer surface of the disk 22, said ring being screw threaded'at 26 to fit the screw threads at the outer end of the shell 9. The ring 24 is provided with outwardly projecting studs or finger holds 27 and 28.
In connecting the attachment to an ordinary meat grinder the short stud at the discharge end is removed and the stud 3,
which is somewhat longer is inserted in its place, and when said attachment is connected to the stud 3 the ring 13 is turned to securely hold the attachment to the-discharge end 1. 7
From the foregoing it will be obvious that the attachment may be used at any time when it is desired. to grind the materials twice to secure the desired grade of material to be ground and the attachment may be readily disconnected or connected to the machine without the use of tools and by an unskilled person.
The attachment is simple in construction, can be produced at comparatively low cost for the reason that some of the parts of the ordinary meat grinder are used, and when attached to either a hand operated grinder or one which is operated by power the ma terials may be ground as finely as desired and will not require a second grinding. In the use "of the ordinary hand operated grinder, many accidents happen in the second grinding owing to the fact that the material has to be pushed down in the hopper and the feed screw is liable to catch the fingers of the operator and injure them severely.
Many modifications in details of construction may be resorted to Without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as defined in the claims.
What is claimed is 1. In combination, a grinder having recesses formed in the inner surface of the tubular casing thereof at its open end, a
shell having an outwardly directed apertured 2. In combination, a meat grinder including a discharge tube, an attachment therefor comprising a shell, a feed screw in said shell, an elongated stud extending into said discharge tube, a cutter and a perforated disk mounted on said stud, said shell having an annular flange, pins projecting outwardly from saidflange and seated between said discharge tube and said perforated disk, a threaded ring fitted to the outer end of said discharge tube for holding said shell in place, a cutter and perforated disk at the discharge end of said shell, and a threaded ring for holding said cutter and disk in position.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
