UMBRELLA.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 632,630, dated September 5, 1899.

To (all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ELISA A. DE BIAGGI and EDWARD BIAGGI, of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Umbrella, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Our invention relates to an improvement in umbrellas, having for its object aconstruction which will prevent umbrellas from being reversed in high winds and also from becoming injured by contact with other objects while in use.
Our invention will be fully described hereinafter and the features of novelty pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a View of the upper portion of an umbrella constructed in accordance with our invention, the crown and its immediate connecting mechanism being shown in section. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan upon the line 2 2 in Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a detail plan of a washer employed and hereinafter more fully described.
The umbrella may be constructed according to our invention in the main like an ordinary umbrella, and the mechanism by which the cover is supported and raised such as may be desired. The drawings show a stem A, provided with a collar B, acting as a washer to prevent the crown C from dropping upon the stem. This crown C is made in the form of a sleeve and is provided'with any suitable means for securing the ribs R thereto. Upon the ribs R a cover J is secured in any usual manner, the drawings showing in addition to this washers I and H, secured to the cover above and below the same.
The upper portion of the crown O is provided with two opposite slots D, which receive inwardly-projecting teeth 9 on a washer G. Surrounding the upper portion of the crown is a bell E, which is secured against upward movement upon the stem by means of a pin F or other suitable means. The lower end of this bell rests upon the upper surface of the washer G, the bell and the collar B preventing movement of the crown C lengthwise of the stem, but holding it so that it is free to rotate upon the stem.
The braces which support the ribs R are seen red at theirlower ends to a runner in any manner, and the runner is arranged so that it is free to turn upon the handle. These parts are not illustrated, as it is not thought necessary to do so.
This construction, it will be seen, will permit the umbrella to rotate freely upon the stem A, so that when a gust of wind strikes the cover the umbrella will rotate upon the stem and spill the wind from one side, thus preventing the reversal of the umbrella. This construction is also of advantage in other casesas, for instance, when the umbrella comes in contact with umbrellas or other objects while the holder is walking it will rotate instead of catching upon and being injured by such objects.
Having thus fully described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent An umbrella having a handle or stem, a crown rotatable thereon-and provided with longitudinal slots in its upper portion, acover and means for fastening it to the crown, a washer resting upon said fastening means and provided with inward projections engaging the slots of the crown, abell surrounding the slotted upper portion of the crown and engaging the washer, and means for preventing the bell from moving longitudinally of the handle.
