WIRE-SPLICER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No; 632,446, dated September 5, 1899.
Application filed January 20, 1899. Serial No. 702,829. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES GILBERT DA- vIs, manufacturer, of the village of Freeman, in the county of Halton, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in YVire-Splicers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in wire-splioers; and the object of the invention is to design a splicer whereby the ends of the wires used, particularly in fences, may be securely and easily fastened together; and it consists, essentially, of two bent arms, preferably broadly V-shaped in form and having one overlapping the other and pivoted wit, the end of one arm being peculiarly formed and provided with a serpentine groove and a central passage-way, the parts being otherwise constructed and arranged in detail, as hereinafter more particularly explained.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my device, showing it in position for actual operation. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the ends of the arms sprung apart so as to permit of the wire which forms the core for the bindingwire being inserted. Fig. 3 is a cross-section.
In the drawings like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure.
A is one bent arm and B the other, which are suitably pivoted on the central bolt 1). The upper end a of the arm A has a certain amount of spring in it and is provided with a depression a, forming a teat at the opposite side, which is designed to fit into a holej) in order to hold the arms together when they are in operative position, as shown in Fig. 1.
The arm B is formed substantially cylindrical with a central passage-way b and a serpentine groove which extends from end to end of the portion B, as shown. A notch b is provided at the outer end. The core-wire is in a central position, as indicated in Fig. 2. Of course when the two wires are joined together, as indicated in Fig. 1, one of the wires in each case forms the core to twist the other upon.
When the wire has been inserted, as shown in Fig. 2, the lower portion of the arm A is thrown down, so as to throw the lug a of the arm A over the top of the core-wire, thereby securely maintaining it in the passage-way 72 The other end of the wire is forced int-o the center of the passage-way,as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2. The wire which it is de= sired to twist upon the core-wire is then inserted into the notch 19 being first brought up into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, and thus the twist is given, as indicated in this figure, by simply twistingaround the arms on the core-wire.
Such a device as I describe is simple and easy to operate, and the splices, as shown, may be readily and quickly made.
WVhat I claim as my invention is"- 1. A splicer for wire comprising two bent arms suitably pivoted together, the end of one being provided with acentral passage-way, a serpentine groove extending from end to end of the same, and a notch at the outer end, as and for the purpose specified.
2. A splicer for wire comprising two bent arms suitably pivoted together, the end of one being provided with acentral passage-way, a serpentine groove extending from end to end of the same, and a notch at the outer end, and the other arm being provided with a lug a designed to overhang the inner end of the serpentine groove and passage-way,as and for the purpose specified.
3. The combination with one bent arm provided with a central passage-way,a serpentine groove extending from end to end and a notch at the outer end, of the coacting arm suitably pivoted on the aforesaid arm and having a spring end provided with a teat formed at its opposite end designed to engage when the arm is closed with a hole on the correspond ing end of the aforesaid arm, as and for the purpose specified.
