Beit known that I, JOHN Enwn. MELLOR, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, and a resident of the city of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring-Hinges, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in spring-hinges which are used for automatically closing a door.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved spring of that kind which is simplein construction, strong and durable, and can be applied on doors opening in one direction only or on doors opening in both directions.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which like letters of reference indicate like parts in all the views, Figure l is an elevation of the upper inner corner of a door provided with one construction of my improved door-spring. Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical longitudinal sectional view through the spring and its casing. Fig. 3 is aplan view of the construction shown in Fig. 2, the cover being removed. Fig. 4 is an elevation of the upper inner corner of a door with another construction of my improved spring. Fig. 5 is an enlarged vertical longitudinal sectional elevation through the spring and casingshown in Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the slotted sleeve around which the leaf-spring is wound.
Figs. l, 2, and 3 show the construction of spring used for doors opening in bot-h directions. The upper inner corner of the doorA is cut out rectangularly, and in the same a right-angled strip B is fastened, from which the pivot-pin B', fixed on said strip, projects upward. A spring-drum C,'having central openings in its bottom C', top C2, and intermediate horizontal partition C2 for receiving the pin B,is provided with Wings C4, by means of which it can be fastened to the door-casing D. The drum C has a'longitudinal interior groove E extending from the top to bottom. Two leaf-springs F' and F2, coiled in opposite directions, are placed into the casing C and are separated from each other by the horizontal partition C2, as shown, and each spring is provided at its outer end with a pin F, located loosely within the groove E. The pivot-pin B is surrounded loosely by two sleeves G-one within each spring F' and F27 and each sleeve is provided with a vertical slot a, extending from top to bottom, and a horizontal slot h, extending from the slot d around each side to a web d, separating the inner ends of the slot b at a point diametrically opposite the slot d, and each sleeve also has a lug g on the bottom edge and diametric'- ally opposite the slot ct, .which lugs g engage the stop-lugs h and h2 on the upper surface of the bottom C' of the drum C and the upper surface of the partition C3, respectively.
The pin B has two studs H H2, which enter the horizontal slots b of the sleeves G, and each leaf-springF' has an inwardly-projecting pin J ,which also enters the horizontal slots b of the sleeves G. Vhen the door A is swung in the direction of the arrow X', the pivot-pin B turns with it, and as the stud H2 bears against one side of the web d the Vupper sleeve G is turned with the pivot-pin B', and as the other edge of the web d bears against the pin J on the inner end of the upper spring F2 the spring is tightened and brought into greater tension, so that when the door is released it is swung back in the inverse direction of the arrow X' under the action of the expandingspring F2. The upper sleeve G can turn with the pivot-pin B when the door is swung in the direction of the arrow X', as the lugg of thel upper sleeve G is on that side of thestoplug h2 on the partition C3 toward which`t`hc door moves when swung in the direction of the arrow X'. The studs H' and H2 on the pivot-pin B' engage the web d of the respective sleeves G on opposing sides thereof, and since these studs travel freely in the slots b of said sleeves it follows that when the door is swinging in one direction, as in the direction indicated by arrow the stud H2 is brought into active engagement with the upper sleeve G, thus winding the spring F2, while the stud H', being on the opposite side of the web cl of the lower sleeve G, moves freely in the slot b away therefrom, and thus the spring F' remains inactive until the spring F2 returns the door to its normal position, when upon the movement of t-he door the IOO which is for a door opening in one direction' only-that is, in the direction from the face of the drawings-the drum C is fixed to the outside of thedoor-casing D, and the pin B2 is 'held 'by a set-screw M on a'bracket-piece el, attached to the door A. When this setscleW is loosened, the spring does not come into action; but Where the set-screw is tightened the pivot-pin'is locked to the door, and the spring can act when the door is opened. The operation is the same as the operation of one of the springs previously described. The
pin B or B2 forms lthe upper pivot for the doom-'and 'at the bottom ofthe door any 'pivot of sui-table construction and arrangement is provided. The partition C3 has a Wing O located in the'groove vE to prevent said partitionffro'in turning.

1. 'In'a spring-hinge, the combination'with a sleeve having a vertical slot open lat its' ends vanda horizontal slot, extending in opposite directions from the vertical slot, of a pin loosely fitting in said sleeve, a projecting lu'g on the pin and adapted to pass into the slots in the sleeve, a casing or drum in which the pin is seated,- a spring'in said casing and sleeve, and means for operatively -connecting saidsleeve and casing, substantially as 'herein shown and described.
2. In a spring-hinge, the combination with a pivot-pin to be secured on the door, of a spring-drum to be secured to the door-casing, a stud on the pivot-pin, a sleeve mounted loosely on the };ii'-vot`pin, which sleeve has a horizontal slot in which the stud on the pivotpin is located, a leaf spring loosely surrounding the sleeve, a pin ou the inner end of said spring and Within the horizontal slot in the sleeve, substantially as herein shown and described.
3. In a spring-hinge, the combination with a pivot-pin and a spring-drum, of a sleeve loosely surrounding the pivot-pinl and having a horizontal slot, a leaf-:spring surrounding the sleeve, apin projecting from the inner end of the'leaf-spring into the 'slot in the sleevea lug on v'the bottom of the 'sleeveand a stop-lug on the upper surface of thefbottom of the druinthe outer end of the leaf-spring being held on the drum, substantially as herein shown 'andde's'c'ribedj Il. In a spring-hinge, the 'combinationwith a pivot-pin of a bracket, 'a thumb-screw in said bracket for locking :the pivot-pin on the bracket, asleeve 'mounted vloosely on the pivot-pin, 'a leaf -spring surrounding the sleeve, a spring-drumsurroundingthe spring, and ymeans for engaging the pivot-pin with the sleeve and the sleeve with the innerend of the spring, substantially as herein shown and described.
