'ro ALL wHoM Ir MAY eoNcnnlN; t i. Be it known `that I, JOHN E. PHILLIPS, of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a'new and useful Press Strainer; and I do herebyr declare that thevfollowing` is a full and exact description thereof,
reference being had to .the accompanying drawings-aand to the letters of reference marked thereon. l
Figure 1 represents my strainer with itsfJbase-plate, detachable funnel and hopper, and cylinder with the plunger therein. I
Figure 2 represents` a detachable screw-plunger, with its Screwring, by which it may be substituted for the plunger land hopper seen in iig. 1.
In vFigure 3 seven diilcrent disks, strainers. andgrates are represented, design-ed for the various purposes for which my invention is intended.
Figure 4 represents the cylinder, with its adjustable cylindrical cover an'd'two screw-rings herein more fully described.
The object of my inventionis to furnish, for various domestic uses, a new article of manufacture capable of use for the preparation of different kinds of food, and for making wine, cider, and similar beverages. Also designed for the use of druggistsA and confectioners in the preparation of tiuctures, extracts, perfumery, and other things of the-same-nature'. l v v In the drawings, a denotes anannular base-plate, with a. flange, by which it may be screwed fast to a table.r The lower half of the cylinder d is perforated, and the band or cylindrical cover e is adjustable, so as to slide down over the perforated portion of cylinder d. The base ringfis provided' with an internal screw, by which ringf issecured to the lower end of cylinder 'LLI-the latter being provided with a. corre'.spond'i'ngrirrg'rvi'tirscrewr thread thereon, as seen in ig.4 of the drawings. lThe hopper c ts into the-topof cylinder ci, and. is detachable, and the handplungen may be used with the hopper; but when the screw-plunger is employed, the hopper 1: is dispensed with, and alargar-one may be placed on the annular screw-holder j, and the latter being provided with an internal 'screv.'thread,-Ivliich iits over tlieupper screw-ring of cylinder a', 'may be rmly fastened thereto- The lower ringf is furnished with an annular flange te receive the flange of the 'funnel g, alsoto support the disks, screens, or grates, and strainers, represented in fig. 3. The outer projecting flange of screwringfis of a form corresponding with.the face of basefplate a, on which it res-ts to support` the whole structure, Instead of supporting the cylinder by means of the base-ringthis ring, audits corresponding screw-ring upon the bottom vof thecylinder, may be-dispensed with, when the cylinder will pass down through the fixed annular base-plate a, and rest thereon by the shoulderformcd by the bottom of the upper screw-ring upon the cylinder d. When thus Inoditied,-th e lower end of the cylinder cZ- will be provided with an internal flange or'ring to receive and supportthe strainers, disks, tbc. i l
7 In using my improvedstrainer for working butter, the band or cover e may be raised to expose the perforated portion of cylinder d; the disk lis placed Ain thel'bottom ofthe cylinder, and `rests upon the flange or ring t'herein,-fwh en the butter istaken from the churnland placed in the cylinder; the hand-plunger is then pressed down thereon, causing the butter 4to be strained in jets through the perforations of the cylinder.`
During this operation, the cylinder may he set into a bucket of water, by Which means the buttermilk will be reitdily separated. Instead of removingv the cover e from the perforated portion of cylinder d, the perforated disk m may be used, and the pressure may be applied'by either' the hand-plunger 6 or the screw-plunger represented in fig. 2. The saine operation will serve for straining lard; and by substituting iner sieves, screens, or
.strainers,'placed between the stronger grates, the ysame operation will serve for separating the juices from ber v ries, apples, and' similar fruits for wine, lite., The same operationwill, with one 4or more of the coarser grates,
`be found lconvenient in the preparation of numerous articles of food, as apple butter,`pie sauces, pumpkins,
and other vegetables. Besides the uses. mentioned, and others of al like nature, it will be vvobvious that my improved device maybe used for stuiiing sausages. For straining milk the tine gauze wire screen will be used; and for stoning cherries the grate, composed of a series of rings marked n, will be used. The milk strainer,
which maybe used daily, is constructed of a line wire gauze, with an annular ring cast thereon. The metals which should be'emp'loyed in thestructure should be such, incorrosive metals, as -may be easily cleansed, and
:it the saine time will impart no unpleasant avor to the culinary articles prepared by my strainer. Hair cloth,
`r fibrous textile fabrics, may be interposed between the grates as stainers or forllterigpug'peses. My handplunger, b, is-constructed with one plane and one convex face, to correspond with the' :fnts'fof the `sez-mens and grates, and the circumference maybe provided with a met/al bond to prevent tlxewo'o-.fom' swelling byvdumpness; andV an India-rubber ring packing may be usedto'pievenh liquids from 'being 'fox-eed pwrds by the pressure-in the cylinder. Y v Y Having fully described my invention and the manner of using the smile2 wh'fti lelaim, and desire to secure by LettexsrPatent, .isy l v l i The perforated cylinderv cZ and band covez` e, in eombination with the disks, straincrs, :1nd a. screw-plunger, and base-plate, a, operated substantially asdescribodfor the purposesmspeeiud.
In testimony hereof'I have hereto set my band. this 26m day of July, 1866.
i Y JOHN PlLLlPS.
