Be it known that I, MARTHA J. s'rnm'r, a citizen of the United States, reriding at Urbana, in the county of Champaign and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and luseful Improvementsl in Colanders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates toan improved colander or strainer. l
The-invention aims to provide a generally improved construction of device of this kind respect to means to positively compress the contents being strained or drained, means to supportan inner or contents containing vessel` within the main vessel, means to fasten the vessel against independent rotary movement Vand; to provide the compressing means in the nature of a weight or plate movable vertically within the inner vessel upon actuation of a screw rod.
With the above and other objects in view,
' the invention has been embodied in one form in the device described hereinaftery in connection with accompanying drawings wherein:-

Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3 with the operating crank cross bar and astening pins for the cross bar removed. F ig. 5 is a cross section on the line 5 5 of Fig. 1 and Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view showing one fastening means for the' bar, the colander and bar fragmentarily, all associated.
Referring speciically to the drawings and wherein like reference characters designate like or corresponding parts an outer or main cylindrical vessel is provided comprising a -lower liquid receiving chamber 1 y and an inner vessel containing chamber 2 of greater diameter than that of the chamber 1 and having its wall integral with that of said chamber 1. The chambers providing at their junction a ledge or shoulder 3. A bottom wall 4 is provided on chamber 1 and depending therefrom are supporting legs 5 which rest on a suitable support as yat 8. Any suitable means may be provided to rigidly clamp the main vessel to a support.

Within the upper or large chamber 2 is a removable cylindrical container vessel 13 having an inwardly extending iangey 14 which directly rests on the ledge or shoulder 3 and supports the vessel 13. A perforated bottom plate or wall 15 for the container is supported on flange 14. Preferably a plurality of vesselsv 13 are employed with a single device but for use one ata time, the perforations of the bottom plates of the different vessels diering in sizes so that the article may be used with substances of different constitution orconsistency.
A screw` rod 16 is rotatably mounted within the vessel 13, at its lower end in the plate 15 by a nut 16and at its upper end rotatably mounted in a bar 17 which` will later be described. Beyond the bar 17, the rod 16 has a square or otherwise polygonal shank 17 which extends through an o enng of a crank handle 18 and is provi ed with a screw threaded stud 19 beyond the handle receiving a fastening nut 20.
Within the inner vessel 13 is a veijically movable, heavy compressor plate 21. This plate has screw threads ata center opening 22 to engage the screw threads of the rod 16, which rod passes through said opening. Said plate is mounted against turning movement relatively to the rod 16 and vto this end may have one or more lugs 23 to slide in grooves 24 provided longitudinally and interiorly of the vessel 13. p
Bar 17 in addition to serving as a bearing for the rod 16 serves to fasten the two vessels 1 and 13 against independent rotary movement. The outer or main vessel has integral therewith on opposite sides spaced apart lugs 25 which extend upwardly froml the upper edge and the inner vessel has integral lugs 26 whichextend upwardly from the upper edge and laline with the lugs 25. Bar 17 removably rests between the lugs 25 and 26 and may be locked against vertical displacement by pins 27 extending above and across the same and through eyes in the lugs 25 as shown.

Handle 18 is then turned to turn the screw 15, which causesdescent or downward sliding movement of the compressor weight or plate 21 against the contents of container or vessel 13, causing the liquid to emerge from the solid matter through the perfora tions of plate 15, the blades 28 serving to prevent packing or clogging of the contents of vessel 13 at. the plate 15. Said liquid accumulates in the chamber 1. All parts are removable and detachable to facilitate cleana removable screw rod passing through said plate, screw threads on the plate engaging the rod passing through said late, screw threads on the )late engaging t e rod, said rod also extending through said bar as a f bearing and to prevent displacement thereof and ,the bottom ofsaid second vessel as a bering, and an operating member on said ro 2. A colander having a main vessel, a removable vessel mounted therein, abutment means on each of said vessels, a plate movable longitudinally of the removable vessel, a turnable rod passing through said plate, means to move the plate through movement of said rod, a bar removably disposed between said abutment means to prevent relative` turning movement of the vessel, and said rod and bar engaging to'prevent displacement of the bar radially of the vessels.
