Description

(45.) OHN AJRDO'N.
Improvement in Churns.`
Paented` Decl i9, i871..
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIOE.w
IMPROVEMENT IN cHuRNs.
i Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 122,026, dated December 19, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN A. JORDAN, of Shelbyville, in the county of Bedford and State Of Tennessee, have invented certain Improvements in Churns; and I do hereby decla-re that the follo wing is a full, clear, and eXact description there- Of, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specitication.
Figure l is a top view. Fig. 2 is a vertical section transverse of the beater, and Fig. 3 is avertical section lengthwise of the beater.
My present invention is an improvement on that for which Letters Patent were granted me March 30, 1858. It consists in the combination of selnicircular or trou gli-shaped revolving sheetmetal arms or beaters with a perforated stationary plate provided with a raised rim or circumferential band, as hereinafter described.
In the drawing, c b indicate the outer and inner walls of the churn, and d an opening through which to pour hot water into the space or chamber c, from which it may be discharged by spout f. h is a sieve or colander in cover g of the oh urn.
These parts I do not claim as novel, but find such construction advantageous.
The beater consists of four or more selnicircular troughs, j, placed at right angles to each other, and all springing` at one end from a-hub, 7c, and at the other end from a ring, l, which encircles al hub, q, that is mounted On a screw, m, passingthrough a wooden plug, n, which is placed in a tube passed for the purpose through the Outer and inner skins. A similar plug, n', is passed through the opposite side of the churn. These plugs prevent leakage. The hub k is mounted on a screw, mf, passed through the plug fn, which screw carries iixed to its Outer end a crank, o, by turning which the beaters j are revolved. The hub q supports a circular perforated plate, p, which stands across the churn within the beaters i, and can be made stationary' in horizontal position by means Of the screw m. 'lhe function ofthe plate p is to gather the butter and keep it elevated above the bottom of the churn in aposition whence it can easily be removed, thus preventing waste by the intermingling Of the particles ofthe butter with the milk. To the edge of this plate is secured a ring or band, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, whose function isrto assist in breaking up the fatty globules in the cream and gathering the butter.
The Operation of the arms or beaters j is also much more efficient than the ring employed in my previous invention, owing to the dili'erence in form.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is Y The revolving semicircular or trough-shaped beaters j formed of sheet metal, in combination with the perforated stationary plate p provided with raised edge or band, as shown and described.
JOHN A. JORDAN.
