UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE;
ALVIN MCDONALD, OF WASHINGTON, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO GEORGE JAOQUIN.
IMPROVEMENT IN COFFEE-ROASTING APPARATUS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 208,025, dated September 17, 1878; application filed August 19, 1878.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALVIN MCDONALD, of 'Washington, in the county of Tazewell, in the State of Illinois, have invented an Improvement in Ooflee-ItoastingApparatus; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making apart of this specification, in which like letters of reference refer to like parts, and in which Figure 1 represents a vertical section down the center of the machine; Fig. 2, a perspective view with the lower portion broken away to exhibit a central section of the coffee-receiver within it.
This improvementis more especially adapted for roasting the berries on cooking-stoves, and belongs to that class of roasters which have an outer case or hood to cover the fire-opening of a stove or furnace, inclosing a horizontally-revolving cofl'ee-roasting vessel.
My improvement consists in modifying the form of arotary roaster from cylindrical, globular, or conoid shapes to that of a eylindroid '5. 0., cylinder-form at the center, but tapering each way, or ending in a frustum of a cone, with the common hollow axle, axle-plug, and tester; the axle-plug being now provided with a socket to receive the end of the hollow axle formed by means of a flange or cylindrical rim, with slot to admit a lug on said axle also, in employing, instead of arms, which appear beyond and on the outside of the base, legs, slotted and secured by means of bolts and nuts within the base; also, in a non-conducting or anti-heat chamber above the hood, and to which the handle or bail is attached, perforated for the escape of heat from about said handle.
In the drawings, which represent one of the forms in which I construct my roaster, A represents a vertical cylinder or case having a tight top, inclosing the coffee-vessel D, havinga flange, B, instead of a flat base or ring, on the inside of which are the legs or arms 0 C 0, adjustable by means of slots therein, receiving screws d and nuts 0, the bolt or screwhead appearing only on the outside of the flange; D, the coffee-receiver, mounted hori' zontally on an axle at either end, one axle, f, 1
E has an outer cylindrical cap, it, returned I over the outer edge of the hollow axle f of the roaster D to retain aroma more completely. The crank-axle F is attached to the center of box E and forms a part thereof. The coffee enters through the open axle f. A lug, m, upon the axle, passes into a slot in the covering-cap h of the box, as a detent.
What I claim as my invention is 1. The cylindroidal coffee-roaster D, combined with the cap or flange h of the hollow axle-plug E, having a slot in its cylindrical lip or flange for engagement with alug, m, on said hollow axle f, and in combination there with, as described. 7
2. In a coffee-roaster, D, of cylindroid form, and hollow axle f and axle box or plug E, the returned flange or lip h, slotted to admit the lug m of the axle f, in connection with a hood, A, having slotted legs 0 O 0, set by means of bolts and nuts (I c, and sliding upon said bolts, as described.
3. The combination and arrangement, with the axle-plug E, of returned lip it over the edge of the hollow axle f of the cylindroid roaster D, the hood A, having perforated up per anti-thermal chamber beneath the handle, and the slotted interior legs C Set on the face of an inclined base, B, as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing coffee-roaster I have hereunto set my hand this 13th day of August, A. D. 1878.
ALVIN MCDONALD.
