No. 630,326. Patented Aug. 8, I899. F. W. CKERING.
WH FL TREE.
A plication filed Feb. 8, 1899 (No Model.)
. FRANK W.
UNITED STATES PATENT; OFFICE.
HALF TO 0. R. COLLINS, OF CABOT, VERMONT.
WHIFFLETREE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Lettersllatent No. 630,326, dated August 8, 1899. Application filed February 8,1899. Serial No- 704,912. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANK W. CHICKERING,
a citizen of the United States, residin g at Hardwick, in the county of Caledonia and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Whiffletrees; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the in-vention,such as will enable others skilled in theart to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention has relation to whiffletrees; and the object is to provide a simple, durable,
and' inexpensive joint for connecting the whiffletree to the doubletree, so that the parts will not become worn and rattle, as is the case Where a simple bolt and nut are used for the purpose.
With this object in view the invention con-.
sists in certain features of construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinaf- 'ter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of a vehicle-axle, its pole, the doubletree pivoted thereto,-and its whiffletrees pivoted to the doubletree. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary sectional viewof the doubletree and the Whiffletree connected together. 3 is a transverse sectional view.
In the drawings, 1 denotes the pole of a vehicle, suitable manner, and 3 the whiffietrees connected to the doubletree near its ends.
. My invention resides in the connection of the Whiffletree with thedoubletree, and I shall now proceed to describe the same.
To the upper each end is secured a plate A, having an up wardly-projecting annular flange a and a central stud a, which projects upwardly slightly above the upper edge of the annular flange.
Secured to the under face of each of the whiffletrees intermediate its ends is a plate B, provided with an annular flange b, adapted to [it within the flange a of the plate A, with a central boss 19', into which projects the stud a of the plate A. Secured to the upper side of the whiflietree in alinement with the boss b of the plate B is a plate 0, having a central recess or aperture 0.
D denotes a clip having a central stud d, which fits into the aperture of the plate 0, and provided with the bulged portions d, which will permit of a limited movement of AlthoughI have a means for connecting the whiffletree to the this joint for the purpose 2 the doubletree pivoted thereto in any" iflailge face of the doubletree near seat, and a clip the Whiffletree, and thereby dispense with the straps usually employed for limiting this,
movement. 1 The lower ends of the clip are closer together and firmly embrace the don bletree and receive the clip-plate E, which is held in place by the nuts F. This clip-plate is provided with a loop e, to which is attached a check-strap G, connected to the axle of the vehicle. This check-strap serves to limit the movement of the doubletree.
For convenience of reference I will term the plate secured to the doubletree the female member of the coupling and that secured to the whiflietree the male member of the coupling.
described my invention as 'doubletree, I would have it distinctly understood'that I contemplate and intend to use p of connecting the whiffletree to the cross-piece of the ordinary thill.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent'of the United States, is
"The combination with the imperforate pieces 2 and 3, of a coupling or joint consisting of the members A and B secured to the adjacent faces of the pieces 2 and 3, the member A comprising an imperforate plate formed with an upwardly-extending annular flange aand a solid vertical stud a, the member B provided withan annular groove to form two concentric annular flanges located within the b, said member B provided with a central aperture to receive the solid stud a, a
pate G secured by screws to the upper face and provided with a central D for securing the two members together, the limbs, of said clip being bulged as at d, and the bight provided with a downwardly-projecting stud to engage said seat, a clip-plate, and clamping-nuts, all arranged and operative in substantially the manner herein set forth.
In testimony whereof my hand in presence of two 'subscrib n'esses.
of the piece 3,
I have hereunto set 'ng'wit- FRANK w. cnrcirnnme.
