IMPROVEMENT IN ADJUSTABLE ESGUTGHEON FOR NIGHT LATGHES.

Be it known that l, W.. T. MUNGER, of Branford, in the county of New Haven` and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in NightLatches; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in con# nection with the accompanying drawings, and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and

exact description of the same, and which said. drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in-

My invention consists in the construction of an adjustable escutcheon, so the saine latch may be used upon doors of various thicknesses.

'Io enable others skilled in the art toconstruct and use my improvement, Iwill proceed todescribe the same as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

A is the latch-ease, enclosing the latch B, and arranged so as to be operated on the inside by a knob, C,-

or its equivalent, in the usual manner. Heretofor'e on latches having a cylinder projecting from the case the cylinders have been formed of different lengths, to cor-respond to different thicknesses of doors, which renders it necessary to manufacture a variety of sizes or lengths of cylinder. To avoid this necessity, and adapt the lock to all thicknesses of doors, I fit a, cap or e's'cuteheon, E, on to the cylinder D, and provided with a slot, F, and set-screw G, and so that the escutcheon may be extended, as denoted in red, fig'. 2,.oicontracted, as denoted in black, and secured by the'set-screw in these,vor any intermediate; positions, according to the thickness of the door, which constitutes my invention. i

Having thus fully described my invention, what Iclaim as new and useful, and desire to secureby Letters Patent, is
