UNITED STATES ATE NT OFFICE.
SAMUEL GRANT BUSH, OF CHARLOTTE, VERMONT.
SNOW- PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 629,543, dated July 25, 1899.
Application filed March 29', 1399 To all whom it potty concern.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL GRANT BUSH, a citizen of the'United States, residing at Charlotte, in the county of Chittenden and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Snow-Plows; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
' My invention relates to improvements in road and highway snow-plows and the object is to provide a simple, inexpensive, effective, and durable snow-plow for clearing roads and highways.
To this end' the invention consists in certain features of construction and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter particularly described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of my improved snow-plow. Fig. 2 is a top plan View with the .body or platform removed and with the extension blades or wings also shown in their housed position in dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the front end of the plow-point. Fig. 4 is a detail view showing the position of one of the counterpart levers when the plow is lowered, and Fig. 5 is a similar view to show the position of said leverswhen the plow is raised.
In the drawings 1, denotes the body or plat-'- form, whichis swiveled on the front runnerframe 2 in the usual manner.
3 denotes the rear runner-frame, fixed on the rear end of the platform, and 4 denotes the V-shaped plow, supported in front of the rear runner-frame by the parallel rods 5 5, pivoted at their upper ends'to the shorter arms of the hand-levers 6 6, fulcrumed on the platform and by means of which the plow may be raised or lowered and locked in either position, ac.- cording to the position of the hand-levers.
7 denotes a short chain connecting the shoebrace 8, fixed to the front end of the plow, with an eyebolt 9, fixed beneath the platform, to cause the plowto train properly in the Wake of the front runners, and 10 1O denote similar stay-chains extending from the rear Serial No. 710,963. (No model.)
'ends of the plow to the sides of the platform to prevent the lateral swaying of the plow.
12 12 denote the extension-wings, hinged to the rear diverging ends of the plow, and the rear ends of these wings are connected to the rear runner-frame by the hinged self-locking braces 13 18, so thatthe wings may be locked in an extended position, so as to form a continuation of the plow, as shown in full lines, or housed, as shown in dotted lines, in Fig. 2.
14 denotes a notch or recess formed in the apex of the plow, which leaves a core in the center of the road to serve as a guide for the teams after-the road has been opened.
It will of course be understood that various changes in the form, proportion, and the mi-- nor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificin g any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is I 1. 1n a snow-plow, the combination with the body and the fixed and the swiveled runners, of the V-shaped plow 4 provided with a reoess 14 at its apex, the shoe-brace 8 fixed to the plow above said recess, and a flexible connection extending from said brace to the swiveled runner-frame, and means substantially as described for locking the plow in a raisedor lowered position.
2. In a snow-plow, the combination with the body and the runners, of the V-shaped plow, the hand-levers fulcrumed on said body, and the rods 5 connecting said plow with the shorter arms of said levers and adapted to lock the plow in a raised or lowered position, substantially as shown and described.
3. In a device of the class described, the plow etformed with the recess 14, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
SAMUEL GRANT BUSH. WVitnesses:
' W.'W. HIGBEE,
HENRY W. ROA'I.
