PLOW.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 1, 1917.
Application filed November 27, 1916. Serial No. 133,775.
- invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plows, of which the following is the specification.
This invention relates to improvements in plows and particularly refers to a cleaning device therefor, and the objects of the invention are to facilitate in preventing soil adhering to the moldboard, to permit of the cleaning device being adjusted to any required extent, to simplify the construction and generally to adapt the several parts to better perform the functions required of them. With the above objects in view the invention consists essentially of the improved construction particularly described and set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings forming part of the same. I
In the drawings,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a plow partly in section embodying the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.
Like characters of reference refer to like parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a plow of any usual description and B the improved cleaning device operatively mounted thereon. This cleaning device consists of a standard 10 having its lower end bolted or otherwise secured to the moldboard 11 of the plow, the said standard being braced intermediate of its ends by the adjustable rod 12, the front end 13 of which is substantially of hook formation adapted to engage with the beam 14 of the plow while the rear end is threaded and provided with nuts 15 designed to embrace one end of the bracket 16, the opposite end of which is connected to the standard 10 intermediate of the height thereof.
The standard 10 is substantially angle shaped with its shorter arm 17 angularly disposed and provided with a slot 19 having recesses 18 at the ends and intermediate of the length thereof through which the vertically disposed link 20 is designed to be actuated. The lower end of the link is slidably mounted in the bracket 21 carried by the standard 10 and is provided with a cleaning knife 22 adapted to coact with the moldboard 11 in a manner to be made clear hereafter.
This link is manually operated by the lever 23 pivotally mounted intermediate of its length to the bifurcated end 24 of the bracket 25 riveted or otherwise secured to the upper end of the standard 10. It is desirable that the lever 23 should be capable of adjustment and to this end a plurality of orifices 25 are provided therein, either of which is adapted to engage with the pin passing through the bifurcated end 24 of the bracket 25 while the link 20 is also provided on its upper end with a plurality of orifices 26, either of which is designed to be engaged with the end of the lever 23 so that the cleaning knife 2-f is thus capable of being elevated or lowered to any desired extent. It will be clear that by utilizing slot 19, on adjusting the lever 23, the link 20 can be moved along the slot 19 to engage with one of the other recesses 18 which will then act as a guide, holding the said link substantially vertical, and prevent any liability of the link becoming laterally displaced. Ther is thus no liability of the link 20 binding in the arm 17 of the standard 10.
The assembly of the-device will be readily understood from the foregoing description.
When the plow is in use the usual traction is applied to the clevis of the beam 14 and should the soil be of a clay nature and liable to adhere or stick to the moldboard the plowman manually operates the lever 23, thereby engaging the knife 22 with the face of the moldboard 11 cleaning any of the soiltherefrom.
From this description it will be seen that I have invented a cleaning device which can be advantageously employed in plows at present in use, and by means of which the moldboard will always be kept in a clean state so facilitating in turning a furrow.
As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely. difi'erent embodiments of my invention, within the scope of the claims, constructed without departing from the spirit or scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the accompanying specification and drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
What I claim as my invention is:
l. The combination with a plow and with the moldboard thereof, of a standard of substantially angle shape provided with a slot in the horizontal arm thereof having recesses at the ends and intermediate of. the length, a link slidably mounted in one of the said orifices, a cleaning knife rigidly mounted in the lower end of the link, and a lever operatively supported from the standard and connected to the upper ends of the link.
2. The combination with a plow and with the moldboard thereof, of a standard operatively secured to the moldboard, a bracket mounted on the standard and provided with an upper bifurcated end, a lever pivotally 1'3 mounted in the bifurcated. end of the bracket, a link pivotally mounted at its upper end to the lever, a cleaning knife rigidly mounted in the lower end of the link, and an adjustable brace operatively connecting the standard to the beam of the plow.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
AMBROISE GARDON.
