Beit known that we, HUBERT WAGNER, Jr. and J AMES H. DAILEY, citizens of the United States, residing at Burlington, in the county of Racine and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buckles, of which the following is a specifrcation, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.

The main objects of our invention are to facilitate the release of a buckle or the de tachment of a strap or band from the tongue of the buckle and generally to improve the construction and operation of buckles for various uses.4

It consists, essentially, of a cast-off connected with the buckle in such a Way as to afford means of forcing a strap or band held by the buckle out of engagement with the tongue; also, of certain novel features of construction, as hereinafter particularly described, and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings like letters designate the same parts in the several figures.

The buckle to which our improvements are applied consists, as usual,of a quadrangular frame A, having cross-bars ct and d at the ends, and of a tongue B, pivoted to the cen ter of the cross-bar a. For convenience of description we will designate the bar a. the front cross-bar and the bar a' the rear cross-bar. The cross-bar a may be provided when desired with a loose sleeve or roller c2.

C and D designate the ends of the same or different straps or bands which are to be fastened together by the buckle, the strap or band D being permanently attached to the rear crossebar a of the buckle-frame in the usual manner. To facilitate the detachment of the strap or band C from the tongue B, the buckle is provided with what may be designated a cast-off, which may be conveniently made in the form of a U-shaped lever E, pivoted at its ends to the front cross-bar o.' of

`the buckle-frame and having a cross-bar e,

'with the opening between the sides of Ythe buckle-frame, but is made somewhat longer and is bent upwardly or outwardly at its end opposite the cross-bar a, so as to serve as a tuck-loop for the strap C and to facilitate grasping its end cross-bar e' for operating the cast-off.

Our improved buckle will be found particularly convenient in connection with saddlegirths, hame, and collar straps and skatea straps or for use as a fastening for any purpose under conditions Where the strap or band engaged by the buckle-tongue is to be drawn taut and the buckle is held snugly against the body or obj ect to which itis applied, such as the body of a horse, the surface of a horsecollar, or the like. Under such conditions it is oftentimes very difficult, if not impossible, especially in cold weather when the hands are cold and numb and the strap or band fastened by the buckle is stiff, to disengage it from the buckle-tongue. This is easily and quickly effected under any and all conditions with ourimproved buckle by turning the castoff E outward from the buckle-frame,as shown in Fig. 2, the cross-bar c passing under the tongue and strap C, forcing them outward and carrying the strap over the end of and disengaging it from the tongue. To prevent the cross-bar c of the cast-off from passing by and out of engagement with the end of the buckle-tongue B, the cast-off E is formed with projections e? which, by engagement with the buckle-frame limit the outward movement of the cast-off at the proper point for releasing the strap from the tongue.

Various changes may be made Within the intended scope of our invention in the construction of the buckle to adapt it to the various uses to which it is applicable.

l. In a buckle comprising a frame, and a tongue pivoted on the rear cross-bar of the frame, a castoff pivoted to the front cross-bar of the frame and serving asa lever to prya strap or band out of engagement with/the tongue, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

2. In a buckle the combination with the frame and tongue, of :t cest-off consistingof a lever pivoted to the front cross-bur of the frame and having a part adapted to extend under the end of :t strap engaged by the tongue, substantially its sind for the purposes set forth.

3. In a buckle the combination with the frame and tongue, of zi cast-off consisting of t lever pivoted to the front cross-piece of the frame and having a cross-piece projecting under the tongue, and a stop for limiting the movement of the cest-off away from the buckle-frame, substantially us and for the purposes set forth.

4. In a bueklethe combination With the frame 'and tongue7 of ai cust-off consisting of a U-shiiped lever pivoted at its ends to the front cross-bar of the frame next to its side bars` and having n cross-bnr passing under the tongue, the free end of the-cast-off rforming 2t tuck-loop, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

5. In a buckle the combination with the frame and tongue, of a east-off consisting of e U-shuped lever pivoted et its ends to the front cross-bar of the frame next to its sides and lhaving a cross-bar passing under-the tongue, the cast-off having adjacent to its connection with the frame projections which serve as a stop to limit the movement of the cest-off away from the frame/substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
