SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent no. 628,833, dated Jul 11, 1899.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN FRANCIS MUR- PHY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Adrian, in the county of Lenawee and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Fire-Kindler, of which the followingis a specification.

This invention relates to fire-kindlers; and the object thereof is to provide a holder for the non combustible absorbent filling and improved means for connecting the same together.

To these ends the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

In the drawings, Figure-l is a perspective View of the device. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional View thereof. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional vie'w thereof.

Like numerals of reference denote like and corresponding parts in each of the several figures of the drawings.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, 1 designates a head or holder formed from a single blank of sheet metal bent upon itself, forming top and bottom sides 2 and 3, respectively. A suitable absorbent filling 4 of asbestos or the like is snugly fitted between the top and bottom of the holder, leaving a portion of the edges of the same projecting beyond the filling to form flanges 5. The device is manipulated by means of a handle 6, having one end provided with a hook 7. The handle is preferably formed from a metal rod having the hook 7 bent therefrom. The top and bottom of the holder are provided with alined openings 8 and 9, formed centrally therethrough. The hooked end of the handle is passed through the openings of the holder and through the filling 4c, and the extremity 10 of the hook is bent back against the outside of the bottom, whereby the handle is connected to the head and the filling is retained in place and a double function is thus obtained.

The filling is to be saturated with an inflammable oil, and when set on fire the flame will be deflected or spread outwardly by the extension or flanges 5, and thereby form a solid flame extending around the three open sides of the head. By this means the device spreads the flame over a comparatively large space, which renders the same more effective in applying a light to kindle a fire.

When the filling becomes useless, it may be removed by straightening the extremity 10 of the hooked end of the handle and removing the same and a new filling substituted.

It will be noted that the handle is extended from the closed end of the head, so that the flame may not extend out toward the hand of the operator, whereby the danger of being burned is obviated.

Changes in the form, proportion, size, and the minor details of construction within the scope of the appended claims may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacri: ficing any of the advantages of this invention.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1. A fire-kindler, comprising a head or holder formed from a single blank of metal bent upon itself forminga top and bottom, an absorbent filling fitted between the top and bottom of the head, and a handle therefor, substantially as shown and described.

2. A fire-kindler, comprising a head or holder formed from a singlev blank of metal bent upon itself forming a top and bottom, an absorbent filling fitted between the top and bottom of the head or holder, the edges of the latter extending outward beyond the filling forming a peripheral flange, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

3. A flrekindler, comprising a head or holder formed from a single blank of metal bent upon itself forming a top and bottom which are provided with openings alined centrally therethrough, an absorbent filling fitted between the top and bottom of the head, and a handle having one end fitted through the holes in the head and through the filling, whereby the latter is secured in place,'the handle extending outward from the closed end of the head, substantially as shown and described.

4. A fire -kindler, comprising a head or holder formed from a single blank of sheet metal bent upon itself forming a top and bottom and one closed end, the top and bottom being provided with eentrally-alin-ed openings, an absorbent filling fitted between the elosedend of the head, substantially as and 10 for the purpose set forth.
