IMPROVEMENT IN FIRE-KINDLERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 126,245, dated April 30, 1872.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM ALTIOK, of
' Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and in the State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire-Kindlers and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of my device. Fig. 2 is an edge elevation of the same, and Fig. 3 is a cross-section on the line a" w of Figs. 1 and 2.

The object of my invention is to provide a simple, efficient, and safemeans whereby hydrocarbon oils and their products may be employed for lighting fires; and it consists in the peculiar construction of the casing for containing the absorbent material, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter specified.
In the annexed drawing, A and A represent two metal castings, corresponding in general size and shape, and each made concave upon one side, so that when said concave sides are placed together the exteriors of said parts form an ellipse in cross-section, as shown in Fig. 3. At one end of each portion of the easin g is formed a neck, a, beyond which said parts terminate in a half acorn, while upon the opposite ends are similar but larger necks, a, through which is left an opening that communicates with the interior of the casing and enables the insertion therein of the absorbent material. As thus constructed the portions of the casing are secured together by means of wire B, wound around the necks a. and a, or by one or more rivets, O, passing through suitable openings within their centers and ends. A lug or prolongation, D, extending longitudinally outward from the open end of one side, A, of the casing, and provided with an opening, d, from either end of which extends longitudinally outward a semicircular groove, permits of the securing thereto of a wire-rod, E,
- by means of which the device may be safely handled. The interior of the casin g being now filled with asbestos or similar non-combustible absorbent material F, and the opening in its end closed by means of cement, the device is ready for use, as follows: The casin g is placed within a can containing one of the light hydrocarbon oils or their products, and when the filling is thoroughly saturated is removed, the oil adhering to the exterior of said casing ignited, and the latter placed within the fuel. By the burnin g of the oil upon the exterior of the casing a sufficient degree of heat is produced to vaporize the fluid contents of its interior and cause the same to issue in a thin sheet of gas from between the contiguous edges of the parts A and A, which gas, being instantly ignited, burns with a steady flame and an intense heat until the oil is exhausted. When not in use it is designed that the device shall be kept Within a suitable can filled with oil, so as to be instantly available for lighting fires 5 and it is believed that if ordinary care is exercised in the use of oil by this means no possible injury can result, while a beneficial eflect will be obtained.
I am aware that fire-kindlersconsisting of a perforated metal cylinder containing absorbent material, and provided with a suitable handle, have heretofore been used, and do not, therefore, claim broadly such device.
Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention, what I claim as new As a new article of manufacture the hereinbefore-described fire-kindler, consisting of the parts A and A, constructed as shown, secured together and fitted with suitable non-combustible absorbent material F, and provided with a handle, E, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
