Description

J. BEARDl Fire-Kindler.
No. 199,683. v Patented Jan. 29,1878.
UNITED STATES' PATENT OEEIoE; .l
yJonN BEAEI), 0E FRANKLIN, INDIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN FIRE-KINDLERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 199,683, dated January 29, 1878 g application filed December 17, 1877.
To all twhom t may concern: v
Be it known that I, JOHN BEAED, of Franklin, Johnson county, State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fire-Kindling Apparatus; and I hereby declare that the following isa true and exact description of my invention, which will enable others to make anduse the same, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and to the letters and gures of reference marked thereon.
The object of my invention is to provide for the combination of a torch and an oilcan, by aid of which the materials for kindling a fire are always readily at hand, and by the poper use of which a fire may be readily kind ed.
Referring to the drawings, Figure I is a side elevation of my improved fire-kindling apparatus. Fig. II is a vertical sectional view. Fig. III is a plan view of the same.
A represents an oil-can, made of any suitable material. a is the screw-cap, by aid of which the opening of the can is closed. b b represent two guards or holders, fastened to the side of the can A at c and d, for the purpose of holding the torch B when not in use.
The torch B consists of the perforated cy-` lindrical metallic receptacle e, open at end f and closed at g. This receptacle is to be filled with suitable material, such as asbcstus or cotton. Into the open end f of the receptacle is placed the handle h, which also serves as a plug to prevent the material from accidentally dropping out.
The operation of my improved lire-kindling apparatus is simply this: The can A is filled with oil, and the torch B is then removed from the guards, and the loaded receptacle 'e is dipped into theoil in the can. The torch, when withdrawn, is lighted, and, when placed under a prepared lire, will readily kindlethe same.
Having thus described my invention, I desire to claim- The combination of the torch B, consisting of the perforated receptacle c and handle h, with the can A, with screw-cap a and guards b, substantially as and for 'the purpose set forth.
JOHN BEARD.
