' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. l
` EDWARD EBEEWSTEE, 0E HOLLY, MICHIGAN.
FIRE-KINDLER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Il.'atent'.'1\lo. 380.176. dated March 27, 1888.
` Application filed July 25, 1887. Serial No. 245,201. (No model.)
clear, and exact description thereof, referencebeing had to the accompanying drawings,
which form a partof this specification.
My inventionrelates to an improvement in fire-kindlers of that class in which the kindling is contained in a'reservoir and burned through the medium of a wick.
The invention consists in the peculiar construction of the reservoir, the position of the wick-tube, and the means for handling the device, all as more fully hereinafter described andclaimed. l
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specilication,-my invention is shown in perspective in Figure 1 and in section in. Fig. 2, in Which- A represents the reservoir, vwhich contains the wick and burning-Huid. This reservoir is made of anovoid shape with very flat sides, in
close contact with the lower bar of the stove or grate in which fire is to be kindled.Y This reservoir is provided on its top with a suitable filling-tube, B, through which oil is -admitted, and the filling-tube is provided with a screwcap or other suitable cover. The wick-tube C projects near the top from one of the attened sides of the reservoir, and is slightly bent upward at its outer end tov give an upward direction to the flame when the device is in use, and also to prevent the spilling of the oil when -not in use, and is provided with a suitable cap or extinguisher, E. The handle 4o D is attached to the side of the reservoir op- Vhandle when not in use.
order that it may when in use be placed inl I posite the Wick-tube by means of the lhingejoint d in such a manner that the outerextremity of the handle can be turned upward, so that the kindler ,may be suspended by the This joint is formed by a socket, F, on thereservoir, in which the handle is pivoted by al pin, d. The handle D has a shoulder, d2, on each side, which bears against the edge f of the socket when the kindler is in use.
In preparing this .kindler for use the reservoir is filled, by means of the filling-tube, with oil or other burning-duid and the wick inserted in the wick tube. Any suitable form of wick, either combustible or non-combustible, 55 may be used. The kindler when in use is placed in close contact with the lower bar of the stove or grate, and is retained in that position until the lire is well lighted. y
When being used, the reservoir comes to 6o a perpendicular position, and is easily held there by the shoulders d2 binding against the socket F. 'l f Y By the use of this device the danger usually attending the use of open oil-reservoirs is 65 avoided, and any gases which may form in the reservoir find ready egress vthrough the large wick-tube and are consumed in kindling the l ire. e
What I claim as my' invention is- The combinationl of the reservoir A, having the wick and filling tubes and the socket F, with the handle D, pivoted in such socket and having the shoulders d2, as and for the purpose set forth.
