To aZZ whont it may concern:

Be it known that I, SALLIE' H. NIXON, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis city, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ink- Wells; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The invention has relation to ink-wells; and the object of the invention is to provide an ink-well with a cover which in the act of dipping the pen may be removed from its position over the well and which after the pen has been dipped will automatically assume its former position and cover the well and protect the ink from evaporation and dust.

With this object in view, the invention consists in certain features of construction and combination of parts, whichwill be hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of myimproved ink-well, showing the cover withdrawn from over the mouth of the ink-well. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view showing the cover in position.

In the drawings, 1 denotes the supportingbase provided with standards 2, which may be formed with pen-racks 3. 4 denotes the ink-well supported on said base, and 5 denotes a rock-shaft journaled in the upper ends of said standards and provided with a laterallydisposed weight 6.

7 denotes the ink-well cover,which is preferably provided with a rearwardly-extending bifurcated lug 8, which is connected to an arm 9, fixed to the shaft and projecting downwardly and provided with a slot 10, the lower end of which is closed and the upper end of which is open. The lower end of this arm is arranged between the bifurcated members of the lug and is connected thereto by a transverse pin 11. Y

12 denotes an operating-arm, one end of I which is connected to the rock-shaft and the other end of which projects downwardly and thence upwardly and is provided with a plate or disk 13.

In operation in the act of dipping the pen one of the fingers is pressed against the plate or disk as the point of the pen is being low ered, and this pressure upon the disk will rotate the shaft and withdraw the cover from overthe mouth of the well, thus permitting the insertion of the pen-point into the well.

As the point is withdrawn from the well the weight exerts its force to rock the shaft in a reverse direction to that just described and the cover is returned to its normal position and the well closed.

The pin-and-slot connection of the cover with the arm 9 insures a snug fit of the cover with the ink-well, which would not be the case were it simply a pivotal connection without a slip-joint, and by having the slot open at one end the cover may be easily and quickly disengaged from the arm 9 when it is desired to refill the well.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, operation, and advantages of the device will be readily apparent without requiring an extended explanation. The device is exceedingly simple, may be made at small cost, and by its employment the ink will be protected from dust and evaporation, thus effecting a great saving. 1

It will of course be understood that various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is

' dially from its axis to form a weight, an arm connected to the rock-shaft and projecting downwardly at right angles to the radiallyextending portion of the rock-shaft and having its lower end turned parallel with its body portion to form an open-ended slot, an angular operating-arm projecting downwardly from said rock-shaft, and a cover having a bifurcated-extension between the members of which is located the transverse pin that fits and loosely plays in the open-ended slot of the downwardly-extendingarm substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
