SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 628,474, dated July 11, 1899.

To all whom, it may concern.-
Be'it known that I, EUGENE H. KINGSBURY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cloverport, in the county of Breckinridge and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stovepipe-Cleaners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to an im provement in stovepipes, and more particularly to a stovepipe provided with a cleaner.
The soot which accumulates in stovepipes conveying smoke from stoves using soft coal is objectionable in that it obstructs the pipe and thereby impairs the draft of the stove, besides which it necessitates the comparatively frequent taking down of the pipe in order to remove the soot.
The object of my invention is to make a Stovepipe which shall have contained in it means for expeditiously cleaning the same in position.
To the above end, therefore, the present invention consists in the improvement in stovepipes hereinafter described, and more particularly set forth in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing, illustrating the preferred form of my invention, the figure represents a vertical sectional elevation of my improved stovepi'pe with the cleaner in position.

In order to permit the cleaner to be moved from one section of the pipe to the other, it is made with a comparatively long rod 6 and short spiral section 5, so that by pulling the spiral portion 5 up into the elbow the cleaner may be turned so as to be projected into the other section of the pipe.
I have shown the hole 8 in the pipe as located exactly at the point of intersection of,
the axes of the two legs of the elbow; but I do not desire to limit myself to precisely such position, as'I consider it'within the spirit of my invention to have the hole located in such a place as to make it convenient to move the cleaner from one leg to the other.
Suitable provision is made for preventing the escape of gases around the rod 6 through the hole 8, and in the illustrated embodiment of my invention this meansconsists of a piece of asbestos packing secured to the pipe by means of clips 10. Thus it is seen that my improved cleaner may not only be inserted in a Stovepipe when the same is erected, but it may be inserted therein after the same has been put up by simply cutting a hole in the proper place in the elbow and attaching the packing around the same and screwing the cleanerintothepipethroughthehole. Thereafter it is intended that the cleaner should remain in the pipe for the reason that once in position it is convenient to clean the same whenever such action shall be necessary,
besides which it is to be observed that such' retention of the cleaner in the pipe constitutes no substantial impediment to the flow of gases therethrough, for the reason that its obstructive area is very slight and will diminish to no appreciable extent the ordinary While I have described my invention. as embodied in the'form illustrated, I desire it to be understood that I do not limit myself specifically thereto, as I regard any equivalent device as being within the scopeof my invention,'preferring, however, the form illus trated. In detail it is pertinent to observe that the'rod 6, which connects the cleaner proper to its handle, may be made of any suitable length commensurate with the lengths of theadjacent members of the pipe attached to the elbow through which the said rod passes.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1. In a stovepipe, the combination with an elbow provided with a small hole in the outer part of its middle section, located substantially at the point of intersection of the axes of the legs of the elbow and provided with an asbestos packing and clips for holding the packing in place, of a cleaning implement provided with a rod for holding the same, adapted to pass through said hole in the elbow and to be closely embraced by the packing around the same, the cleaning implement having such proportions that it may be turned in the elbow without being removed there from, so as to clean both adjacent legs of the pipe to remove accumulated soot from the same, substantially as described.

In a stovepipe, the combination with an elbow, provided with a hole in the outer part of its middle portion, and provided with suitable packing, and means for holding the same in position, of a Stovepipe-cleaner provided with a rod adapted to be projected through said hole and of a length commensurate with the length of the adjacent pipe, the said hole being located substantially at the point of intersection of the axes of the legs of the elbow, so as to permit the cleaning implement being turned in the elbow, whereby the said cleaner may be projected into both adjacent legs of the pipe to remove accumulated soot from the same, substantially as described.
