UNITED STATES PATENT, OFFICE.
l/VILLIAM HENRY JAMES, OF TULSE HILL, ENGLAND.
LEMON-SQUEEZER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 628,470, dated July 11, 1899.
Application filed February 15, 1899. Serial No. 705,566. (No model.)
To call whom it mag/concern Be it known that I, WILLIA HENRY JAMES, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Tulse Hill, in the county of Surrey, England, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Devices for Squeezing or Pressing Lemons, (for which I have obtained Letters Patent in Great Britain, No. 15,848,
' hearing date the 20th day of July, 1898,) of
. the case or cover.
which the following is a full and complete specification. I
This invention relates to an improved device for squeezing or pressing lemons; and it consists, essentially, of a pair of arms or levers pivoted together crosswise at or about the center of their lengths, the ends at one side of the fulcrum being adapted to embrace the lemon or portion thereof and the other ends to be grasped by the hand of a suitablyshaped case or cover closing the operating ends of the arms or levers, and of a perforated lid hinged or otherwise attached to the bottom of the case or cover and carrying feet for supporting the device, the object being to provide a simple and effective device for the purpose specified and one better adapted for table use than those at present in use.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate by way of example some methods of carrying this invention into practical efiect,
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of one form my invention may assume. Fig. 2 is a similar view, partly in section, showing the lid of the case or cover partly open. Fig. 3 is aview in elevation, partlyin section, showing an alternative construction of the lid of Figs. 4 and 5 are views in elevation, showing an alternative construction in which the case or cover is adapted to be open. Figs. 6 and 7 are views in side elevation and plan, respectively, showing a construction in which the case or cover is made of glass, earthenware, or the like; and Figs. 8 and 9 are views in side elevation and plan, respectively, of a further modification in which no case or cover is employed.
Throughout the views similar parts are marked with like letters ofreference.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2, the arms or levers A A, which are preferably alike, are pivotedtogethercrosswise at or about the center of their lengths by a pin, such as a, so as to form a compound fork. The upper ends a a of these arms or levers are splayed out and shaped to adapt them to be easily grasped by the hand to press them together, and the lower ends a a of the said arms or levers are each made of a spoon or equivalent shape to enable them to grasp or grip a lemon or portion thereof between them. The lower parts a a of the arms or levers A'A are inclosed in a suitable case or cover 13 to prevent the juice being squirted about. This case is preferably made of a bell shape, as shown, and is attached to the arms or levers by means of the pivoting-screw a. The open end of the case or cover B is closed by means of a plate 0, having straining-perforations c. able the lemon or portion thereof to be placed between the squeezing ends a a of the arms or levers A A, this plate is hinged or otherwise attached to the bottom of the case or cover B. The plate 0 is provided with suitably-shaped feet 0 to enable the device to he stood in an upright position, with the perforated plate 0 clear of that on which the device is placed.
In a modified construction the plate 0 is provided with a separate and detachable strainer D, as shown by Fig. 3.
In a further modification the case or cover is made in two parts B and B, hinged together for the purpose of introducing the lemon, as
shown by Figs. at and 5. In this construction the part B of the case or cover is attached to the arms or levers A A by the pin a, and the other part B is hinged to the plate C, which is itself hinged to the lower end of the part B of the case or cover, so that the three parts are hinged together, thus allowing the case or cover to be opened both at the side and bottom. Suitable catches b are provided to hold the two parts B and B of the case or cover in engagement.
The case or cover 13 and the plate 0 may be made of any suitable metal or material; but if a fragile material, such as glass or earthenware, is employed, as shown by Figs. 6 and 7, the case or cover B is mounted on an open metal frame, such as B which is attached to To enthe arms or levers, as hereinbefore described, and the plate 0 is mounted in a metallic ringframe, such as C, adapted to be attached to the frame B, as hereinbefore described.
Although it is preferred to employ a case or cover to inclose the lower or operative ends of the arms or levers, such is not actually necessary, as the straining-plate O and the feet 0 may be carried by a light frame B adapted to be attached to the arms or levers by the pivoting-pin a, as shown by Figs. 8 and 9.
If desired, a spring may be employed to act betweenthe ends a a of the arms or levers to open the ends a a when the ends a dare released.
WVhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
