PACKAGE FOR PERCOLATING COFFEE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 634,349, dated October 3, 1899.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY M. HUMPHREY, of Plainfield, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Package for Percolating Coffee, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a porous or percolating bag for coffee and a means for normally sealing the bag at the mouth, but to so construct the sealing device that a portion of the mouth of the bag may be opened and the said sealing device be employed for suspending the open bag within a pot or other receptacle in which coffee is to be prepared.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar charactersof reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved percolating-package and the device employed for sealing the mouth of the package, the mouth of the package being shown closed. Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. l, a
portion of the mouth of the package being opened and in position to receive liquid. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the improved percolating-bag, illustrating the sealing device as formed into a hook for the purpose of supporting the bag with its mouth open in a receptacle; and Fig. 4: is a vertical section through a receptacle in which coffee is to be made and a section through the percolatingbag supported within the receptacle by means of the hook formed as shown in Fig. 3.
The body A of the bag is preferably made from a coarse or porous material, such as cheese-cloth, or any material through which water may readily pass. The shape of the bag A, although shown as rectangular, may
be changed, and it is closed on three edges, the month only of the bag being open when said bag is completed. After a sufficient quantity of ground coffee has been placed in the bag the mouth of said bag is closed by a sealing-plate 10, and this plate is provided with a flange 11,which is bent over the mouth of said bag, engaging the material of the bag at each outer side edge of its mouth. The flange 11 of the sealing-plate is crimped, compressed, or'ot-herwise forced in close contact with the material of the bag, so as to hold the mouth closed, and the flange 11 of the sealing-plate is provided with a transverse depression or indentation 12, placed usually between the center of the flange and one end,
and in attaching the sealing-plate to the mouth portion of the bag A that portion of the flange and sealing-plate between the indentation 12 and the adjacent end is so firmly fixed on the bag that said bag cannot readily be separated from the sealing-plate between said two parts; but the flange and sealing-plate between the indentation 12 and the opposite or farthestreinoved end of the sealing-plate is attached to the bag with sufficient force only to keep the mouth closed, so that when it is desired to make drip-coffee a portion of the mouth of the bag may be separated from the sealingplate, as shown in Fig. 2, the separation of the mouth of the bag from the plate being between the indentation 12 and the end of the plate farthest removed therefrom. The separated portion of the sealing-plate is next bent upon itself in a downwardly direction, forming a hook 10, and when the plate is thus bent, as shown in Fig. 3, a portion of the mouth of the bag is held open, and the bag may be supported within a receptacle B, as shown in Fig. 4, bypassing the hook 1O over the upper edge of the receptacle, the bag be ing suspended within said receptacle. Water is then poured into the bag and permitted to percolate through the coffee in the bag and from the bag into the receptacle.
Under this construction of coifee-package it is evident that the bag or package maybe placed in the coffee-pot without opening the mouth of the package and the strength of the coffee be withdrawn by properly heating the fact, a strip of metal may be employed of such width only as to clamp opposite sides of the package or bag.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A coffee-package, and a sealing device for the mouth of said package, said device hein g pliable and securely attached to the In outh portion of the package for a portion of the length of said mouth.
2. Acoffee-package, consisting ofa bag constructed of a porous material, and a sealing plate or strip of a pliable material, the sealing plate or strip being provided witha flange and With a division between its ends, said plate or strip being adapted for clamping engagement with the mouth portion of the bag, a positive attachment between the bag and sealing-plate occurring only between the said division and contiguous end of the plate or strip, substantially as described.
3. A coffee-package consisting of a porous bag, a sealing plate or strip for the mouth of the bag, adapted to extend over said month, having a division between its ends, the said plate or strip being attached throughout its length to the mouth portion of the bag, the bag being adapted to be disengaged from the sealing plate or strip between one end thereof and said division, and positively secured to the plate or strip between its division and the opposite end of the plate or strip.
