SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 627,327, dated June 20, 1899.

Be it known that I, GEORGE W. OROWE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Anderson, in the county of Madison and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tiles, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my said invention is to produce a tile which in being set will become very securely locked or attached to the bed of mortar upon which it is placed. It is especially designed for that variety of tiles which are used on walls, as the walls of bathrooms and the like. Said invention will be first fully described and the novel features thereof then pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part hereof and on which similar reference characters indicate similar parts, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the under side of such a tile embodying my present invention; Fig. 2, a plan view of the under side of such a tile, on an enlarged scale, substantially full size, as ordinarily made; Fig. 3, a longitudinal sectional view as seen from the dotted line 3 3 in Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 an end elevation of the same as seen from v the dotted line 4 4t alongside Fig. 2.

The distinctive features of this tile are the tapered and nnderhung or dovetail-shaped recesses 1 and 2. These recesses, as clearly shown in the drawings, are of such a form as to be readily withdrawn endwise off the face of the mold part by which these surfaces are formed, while they are adapted to lock firmly onto the mortar in which they are embedded. The recess 1, as plainly shown in the drawings, tapers down also on an angle with the faceof the tile, being deepest at its narrowest end and gradually diminishing to nothing at its widest end. The edges, however, overhang the space, both across the narrowest end and along the sides. The recess 2 is Serial No. 714,306. (No model.)

bottom is parallel with the surface of the tile, and its widest end, instead of terminating on the flat surface, terminates at the end,

as plainly shown in the drawings. Like the recess 1 its edges at the narrow end and along the sides overhang, so that the recess is widest at the bottom.

The remaining portion of the under surface of the tile is substantially covered with grooves g, which aid,when forced against and embedded in soft mortar, in securing the tile rigidly and strongly in place.

Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A tile having upon its under surface the tapered recesses 1 and 2 which are narrowest at the closed ends and widest at the open ends with the edgessurrounding the narrow ends and sides formed overhanging, said recesses being widest at the bottom while adapted to be easily removed from the mold by reason of their tapered form, substantially as shown and described.

2. As a new article of manufacture, a tile having the recesses 1 and 2, said recess 1 being deep at the narrow end and tapering back thence until it wholly disappears at its wide end with those edges which bound its narrow end and sides formed overhanging making the same dovetailed, and the recess 2 being likewise formed narrow at its closed end and wide at its upper end with the edges corre spondingly overhanging, the said recess 2 being of equal depth with its wide end coin- 8o cidental with the end of the tile, all substantially as shown and described.
