Description

No. 626,9I6. Patented lune l3, I899.
L. LUCKHABDT.
CORSET STAY.
A nmion fllad Deg. 15, 1897.) (No Model.)
UNITE STATES PATENT OFF CE.
LUDW'IG LUCKHARDT, OF CASSEL, GERMANY.
CORSETSTAY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 626,916, dated June 13, 1899.
Applioation filed December 15, 1897.
T0 (tZZ whom, it nuty concern:
Be it known that I, LUDWIG LUCKHARDT, a citizen of the Empire of Germany, residing at Oassel, in said Empire of Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corset-Stays, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved stay for corsets, waists, &c., which are not liable to breakage like stays made from whalebone or steel heretofore in use and which are not liable to injure the garments in which they are used.
- My invention consists of a corset stay formed of a flattened tube of flat closelybraided wires, as will be hereinafter described and then claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my imp'roved corset-stay formed of braided wire of flat cross-section. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the same on line 2 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a portion of a modified form of a stay formed of strands of fine wire braided together; and Fig. 4 is a horizontal section on line 4 4, Fig. 3.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the body of myiinproved stay, which is formed of .wires of flat or other flattened cross-section, which are braided or interlaced in a suitable braiding-machine into a tube and then pressed into flat shape between pressure-rolls. The wires are closely braided together, so as to form a compact and intimately-woven structure. The flattened tubular wire braid Serial No. 661,953. (No model.)
thus obtained is cut into required lengths and reinforced by cores B, formed of thin strips of metahwhalebone, cane, or other suitable material which is inserted into the per forated stay. The flattened and braided outer portion of the body of my improved stay is formed either of thin and flattened Wires braided together,.as shown in Fig. 1, or the braided body may be formed of a number of strands of thin round Wires which are braided together, as shown in Fig. 3. The braided and flattened stay thus obtained is protected after the core is inserted by means of the usual sheet-metal tips 0, used for protecting the ends of corset-stays heretofore.
My improved stay has the advantage that it is very durable and of a high degree of elasticity. It is protected against corrosion by a suitable non-corrodible varnish, so as to form practically an unbreakable corsetstay which is far superior to the stays made of whalebone, steel, or other material before in use.
} Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A corset-stay,consisting of a flattened tube, composed of flat, closely-braided wires, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in pres- Witnesses HEINRICH BROMELS, OTTO GROSSCURTH.
