NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MAURICE SWVITZER, OF NEWV ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
ADVERTISING OR DISPLAY CARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 625,991, dated May 30, 1899.
Application filed March 2, 1899. Serial No. 707,511. (No model.)
To (tZZ whowb it ntay concern:
Be it known that I, MAURICE SWITZER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Advertising or Display Cards, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to advertising or display cards for packages-such as cigar-boxes, candy-boxes, or the likein which goods are to be exhibited for sale in. show-cases or on counters while the box is open, its lid being removed or thrown back. It will be obvious that if in displaying the box contents it should become necessary to tear off the lid or turn it over against the back of the box, as when the boxes are arranged in a show-case closely side by side, any advertising matter that is usually placed on the inner side of the boxlid will be thus made unavailable for purpose of display. To obviate this difficulty, the dealer is sometimes supplied with a convenient form of display-card that can be attached to the box in a convenient or suitable position to indicate the character or quality or price of the goods, and it is preferable that such card should be inexpensive, capable of folding down within the box when the lid is.
closed, and adapted to assume and maintain an erect position when the lid is removed or thrown back.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved display-card of simple and effective fly-back construction that will meet all the ordinary requirements of the retail trade in box goods, particularly cigars, and which shall be adapted to fold down in the interior of a closed box and promptly spring to an erect display position on throwing back the box-lid. To this end my improved display-card consists of a base portion to be attached to the inner side of one wall of a box, an upper or body portion, on which is placed the advertising matter to be displayed or exhibited, and an elastic hinge-strip extended along and secured to the abutting marginal portions of said base and body parts in such manner that the body portion of the card will immediately take an upright position on being relieved from any restraining pressure, such as exerted by a closed box-lid.
In the annexed drawings, illustrating the invention, Figure 1 is a perspective of an open box of cigars provided with my improved display-card. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section of a box, showing the'position of the display-card when the box-lid is closed. Fig. 3 is a similar view with the box-lid thrown back and showing the display-card as having assumed a vertical position.
The reference-numeral 1 designates the cigar-box, and 2 the box-lid.
As shown in the drawings, my display-card consists of the base 3 and body 4, connected along their abutting edges by an elastic hingestrip 5, preferably composed of india-rubber, which is secured both to said base and body by'any suitable cement. The base 3 and the body 4 may each be made from pasteboard or other suitable material, and it may be preferable to make the base of double thickness below where the elastic hinge-strip 5 is attached in order to provide a flush joint between the edge of said thickened portion and the. adjacent edge of the rubber band and to also present an even surface at the back of the card for securing the same to the box. Furthermore, the upper edge of the thickened portion of the base serves as a guide or abutment for the rubber band when cementing the latter in place, which greatly facilitates this operation. This base portion 3 of the display-card is to be attached to the inner side of one wall of a box, preferably adjacent to where the box-lid is hinged, and it may be pasted, cemented, or tacked in place, as found most convenient.
On the face of the card-body 4 will be placed the desired advertising matter or any required information, such as the name, quality, or price of the article exhibited for sale.
The elastic hinge-strip 5 is preferably arranged along the back of the card and connects the abutting edges of the base 3 and body lin suchmanner as to normally hold the said base and body in the same plane when not subjected to restraint, such as exerted by the closing down of a box-lid onto said card.
It will be observed that when this displaycard is attached to a box and the lid is closed down the card-body 4: will bend over at the elastic strip 5 and lie flat on the contents of the box and when the box-lid is removed or thrown back the tension of the elastic strip 5 will cause the card-body 4 to immediately rise or assume an upright position suitable for display of the advertising matter thereon. Thus, too, any box in a show-case can be made conspicuous, so as to draw the attention of customers. By this means also various brands of cigars or other articles in a show-case can be easily distinguished or identified, and as the display-card is securely attached to the box it is not likely to become displaced, so as to cause confusion.
It will be observed that the improved display-card requires no metal springs or frames that are so liable to injure the Wrappers of cigars, and the entire device is of such simple and comparatively inexpensive construction that it can be readily furnished to retail dealers by the manufacturers of various kinds of box goods.
MAURICE SWITZER.
